LESSON 17: CONVENTIONAL LEARNING RESOURCES

ENGAGE

Interview three teachers, preferably from different educational levels. Ask the
teachers on what instructional materials which do not use advanced technology are they
still using up to the present. Let the interviewees cite the advantages of using the said
materials. Prepare a report on the interview

REPORT
According to the three teachers that I've interviewed via messenger, the
instructional materials that they are still using up to the present are blackboards, chalk,
flashcards, worksheets, flip cards, posters, textbooks, pictures, charts, dramatization,
story-telling, models, exhibit and many more. They mentioned that these instructional
materials are still effective in making the learning of students interesting, practical,
realistic and appealing. It enables them and their students to participate actively and
dynamically in lesson sessions. They give room for acquisition of skills and knowledge and
development of self-confidence as well as self-actualization. Furthermore, utilizing these
materials gives them as educators a greater understanding of the characteristics of
efficient instructional strategies.

EVALUATE

Answer the following questions briefly but substantively

1. Why there is a need to still study conventional learning resources despite of the
multitude of digital resources in our midst?

Conventional instructional materials are essential and significant tools needed for
teaching and learning in order to promote teacher's efficiency and improve student's
performance. It provides the much needed sensory experiences needed by the learners
for an effective and meaningful behavioral change. These traditional Instructional
materials constitute alternative channels of communication, which a teacher can use to
convey more vividly instructional information to learners and they represent a range of
materials which can be used to extend the range of vicarious experience' of learners in a
teaching-learning situation.

2. What are the advantages and limitations of printed media, maps and globes,
flashcards, exhibit, display boards, dramatization, realia and models in a classroom?

ADVANTAGES LIMITATIONS
Printed materials are adaptable to many Some text introduced a large numbers of

heavy cognitive burden in students.

creativity and imagination money and labor
Real objects can be viewed, handled and Real objects are generally more expensive
examined by students from various angles, than pictures and graphics
providing first-hand experiences.
Models simplify real objects for better Some models demand classroom space in
study by removing some significant details terms of storage
and reducing/enlarging to desirable sizes.
3. How can we effectively utilize exhibits, display boards, dramatization, realia, and
models in the classroom?

Implementing the use of display media within the classroom is a great way to get
our students engaged, excited and working together, helping to maximize learning and
personal skills. In order to effectively use these types of instructional, the teacher should
always create a plan on how they will apply the different display media in their instruction
and in aggrandizing the learning environment of their students. Selecting the most
appropriate display media in meeting the objectives and learning competencies of their
lessons can help educators to fully attain the effectiveness and efficiency of a particular
conventional learning resource.

EXTEND

 Choose a grade level along your field of specialization and refer to its K-12
Curriculum Guide. Prepare a construct of supplementary material, flash cards, an
exhibit, display board, dramatization, realia and model from sample competencies in
the curriculum guide.
