Introduction
Hey there future paleontologists! I have some questions for you. Can you tell me what Earth
looked like 1 million years ago? What kinds of plants and animals lived here? Today, you're
going to answer these questions! You will become an expert in fossils and I’m excited to see
what you find. Let’s get digging!

Task
There are two different activities in today’s lesson. For the first activity, you’re going to
watch a video about paleontology. Answer the questions provided as you watch this video.
It will help you learn some key terms like: fossils, extinct, and paleontologist.

For the second activity, you will read an article about paleontologists and answer the
questions. In this article, you will learn more about what paleontologists do, see examples
of fossils, learn about the root word paleo and much more.

As a bonus, there is a third activity if you finish the first two activities before work time is
over. Activity three is an online game where you compare fossil layers based on age. Let’s
see who can complete the highest level of difficulty. Good luck!

Evaluation
You will be graded on how well you followed along the WebQuest and how accurately you
completed your graphic organizers.

There were 5 questions for both activity one and activity two, adding up to 10 questions
total. Each question is worth 1 point, with an exception to number 5. in activity one and
number 5. in activity two. These two questions are worth 3 points each because they
require three different steps. Altogether, the questions you answered during this WebQuest
add up to 14 points. You will receive another 6 points for participation if you were active, on
task, and respectful during the WebQuest activities. That means, this WebQuest is worth a
total of 20 points.

Conclusion
Thanks for answering all of my questions! I feel like I am a fossil expert now, just like you.
After completing these activities, I hope you have learned more about what it’s like to be a
paleontologist. Throughout the next two weeks, we are going to dig deeper into fossils and
paleontologists. If you did not get the chance to complete activity three, you will have
another opportunity to do so.
