Ans: There can be two reason as to why a person may be acting ethically. Either he is forced
to act ethically because of some enforcement from external sources like office norms, rules or
some kind of laws; or his own moral values doesn’t let him do unethical practices. In both the
cases he will be driven to act ethically.
Ethics are rules of conduct. Laws are codifications of ethics meant to regulate society.
Though ethics does not carry any punishment to anyone who violates it, the law will punish
anyone who happens to violate it. Hence even though being ethical does not pays, the cost of
being unethical is very high because such unethical activities may be considered as unlawful
and hence be punishable. So, the person acts ethically.
Another reason to say, be ethical even if it doesn’t pay comes from moral values. As the
word "ethic" comes from Old French (etique), Late Latin (ethica), and Greek (ethos) and
referred to customs or moral philosophies. Ethics are based on moral values and are set out to
be consistent within a certain context. Hence not acting ethically would mean, he will be in
guilt if he acts on contrary to his own held moral values of his right and wrong. And because
his stillness will be disturbed, he would act ethically.
