Discussion 1 - Introduction

Hello everyone! My name is Kayla McCray. I bring greetings

from Georgetown, SC – where I was born and raised. I am a
6th grade Science and Social Studies teacher at RMS in
Georgetown County Schools. This is my 5th year teaching.
My five years have been at my current school however, I
have been teaching different subjects. A fun fact about me
is I said I would never set foot back in a middle school but
here I am! I earned my undergrad from Coastal in
Elementary Education. I also have my Masters in
Instructional Technology. One thing I fail at is time
management so I am hoping that is an underlying skill I can
learn from this course. I look forward to strengthening my
knowledge of technology and one day teach others about
the use of technology.
Discussion 2 – Technology Skills

My love for technology and my ability to figure it out versus

getting frustrated led me to this program of study. I enjoyed
my classes so much from my master's that I decided to go
the extra step and take the next level of classes. Technology
has always been my passion and I have always been able to
quickly maneuver almost anything technology related,
sometime with no background knowledge. My skills are
really focused on technology as a whole. Three areas that
could use more work are video skills, some software
programs, and Photoshop. Overall, I would say my level of
expertise would be about 7 out of 10. Technology is also
always changing so sometimes, just when you think you are
becoming more advanced with something, here comes new
updates. Being that we are 1:1 at our school, I am always
looking for ways to efficiently and effectively incorporate
technology into my lessons for my students to grab and
keep their attention. I feel this class and program will help
me do just that.
Discussion 3 – Multimedia in the Classroom

George Evans once said “every student can learn, just not
on the same day or in the same way”. When it comes to my
students, I know that if I can just touch one child, my work
is not in vein. I know that each child is different and learns
differently. In my class, I aim to differentiate my lessons so
that I can help students learn. Through the use of
multimedia, I am able to touch on multiple different
learning styles. The advantage is, for example, with a video,
students are able to see and hear the information
presented to them. There are disadvantages as well. The
students who are kinesthetic fall in the cracks because
watching a video does nothing to reach them and their
learning style. Therefore, you would need to look into
something that does address their learning style.
Discussion 4 – DID Model Challenges

I believe the most challenging stages would have to be asses

and revise as well. Students always want instant feedback
on their assignments. However when there are 100+
students, that becomes a little challenging to do. One
change that I could make to prevent this from future
endeavors would be to make incorporate the use of
GoogleForms which has a feature which allows for instant
feedback that the students desire. I can make so many
modifications to this form as well for both my students who
need special services as well as my students who should be
challenged. Another way, I could overcome this difficulty is
to set up a system. I could set that I would grade a specific
class’s on a certain day, I could go by last names, or just
have a certain day where I will do assessments and revisions
where I have some grading time in between to allow for me
to do the differentiation and feedback that the students
desire.
Discussion 5 – Gifted Students
A recent assignment I had my students to do was create a
brochure. They had to use the information given to them
and organize it to produce a final project that was an
informational pamphlet about the civilization that we were
learning about. They were given a rubric to follow to
produce their brochure as well. This assignment was done
on paper. I could have had the students make the first draft
on paper and then use a program such as Google Docs to
create their final product. For a gifted class, I may lay off on
the expectations to create some areas of creativity and
challenge. I may even just give them the expectations and
have come up with a way to present the information to me.
This way, they would have more experience with the
program as well as experience with doing certain tasks on
the platform. I may have also had the students to make a
survey that their classmates could complete as well. This
would allow them to get feedback on their productions as
well as be able to use and explore a survey platform such as
www.surveymonkey.com.
