Nursing Informatics has been defined by many great scholars who have
contributed a lot with the increased exploration and understanding in this field.
McCartney define Nursing Informatics as the 21st century science with great
potential for improving the quality, safety, and efficiency of health care
(McCartney, 2004). Nursing Informatics is a technology-focused, that is why it
makes sense that its definition, role, education, competencies, and the career path
of its practitioners changed significantly through the years. So, what are the
impacts of Informatics on the nursing care? First and foremost, since the goal of
Nursing Informatics is to improve health and to utilize technology, I will be
categorizing it by, first, how is the effect of improving the health to the patients.
Second, how is the effect of utilizing technology changes the way health care
is delivered. In terms of improving the health, NI helps the nurses or clinicians
have better understanding in clinical communication that are making it easier to
manage clinical work flows, improve coordination, and patient outcomes which
leads to better patient care and safety. NI also helps in clinical documentation,
since clinicians have more access to electronic health records, diagnostics,
treatment plans, etc.. For instance, they can record the roots of mistakes done in
an unexpected situation, so that they can learn from their mistakes and learn from
each other.
Moreover, utilizing technology can really deliver better patient care in terms
of safety, evidenced-based care and/or clinical documentation. In conclusion,
informatics has great impact on nursing care as they take a big role in the delivery
of care, building of knowledge, skills, and experience in the use of information
technology.
