Assignment 1 MT

This document contains three questions regarding diffusion rates of gases through layers. Question 1 asks to estimate the rate of diffusion of ammonia through a 4mm thick layer where the ammonia concentration goes from 60% to 10%. Question 2 asks to calculate the molar rate of carbon dioxide diffusing through a plane that is 5mm wide and 7mm long. Question 3 asks to find the mole flux of component A diffusing through a 6mm thick film where the concentration starts at 55% and the component reacts upon reaching the catalyst surface.

Assignment 1

Q.1
Ammonia gas is diffusing at a constant rate through a layer of 4 mm
thick, where water vapor. Conditions are such that the gas contains 60
percent by volume ammonia at one boundary of the layer. The ammonia
diffusing to the other boundary is quickly absorbed and the concentration
becomes 10 percent by volume at that plane. The latent heat released
from ammonia to be condensed is same that volatizes same amount of
water. The temperature is 298 K and the pressure 1.5 bar, and under
these conditions the diffusivity of ammonia in water vapor is 1.7 × 10 -5
m2/s.

ESTIMATE the rate of diffusion of ammonia through the layer.

Q.2

In an air - carbon dioxide mixture at 300 K and 120 kPa, the mass of CO2
in the plane at first point is 18 g and after some distance of 5 mm the
mass is 2 g. The diffusivity of CO2 in air at 300 K and 120 kPa is 7.8×10-6
m2/s.

CALCULATE the molar rate of CO2 across the plane of 5 mm width and
7 mm length, assuming:

a. Equimolecular counter diffusion.

b. Diffusion of CO2 through a stagnant air layer.

Q.3

A component A in a gaseous mixture diffuses through a (6 mm) thick

film and reaches a catalyst surface where the reaction A → 0.5 B takes
place. If concentration of A in the bulk of the gas is 55 % (v%) and the
diffusivity of A is 2.5×10-5 m2/s. Find the mole flux of A, given the
pressure and temperature of the system are 102 kPa and 305 K,
respectively.
