About the place
An ancient art-form from the land of Mithila.
Madhubani is 190 km from Patna, the capital of Bihar
in India. This art is popular in North Bihar and
originally in some parts of Nepal.
This painting is originally a form of bhitti-chitra or
wall art and it is a heritage rooted in the rhythms of
Hindu ritual life.
There are types of Madhubani painting that are
practiced in different areas, according to caste and
areas in Madhubani district.
The themes and motifs are usually possessed with
symbolic meanings- the turtle is also a symbol of
Vishnu in one of his avatars and long life, and
masculine sexuality respectively.

Created by filling the colors with a brush. This

is accomplished through either filling or
hatching.

These paintings are well-known for their tribal

themes and use of bright earthy colors.

The main characteristics of all Madhubani

paintings include a double line border, ornate
floral patterns, abstract-like figures of deities,
and bulging eyes and a jolting nose of the
figures' faces.

Design Vocabulary
Madhubani paintings are religious and
mythic in nature. Gods such like Raja
Salesh, Buddheshwar, Jutki Malini,
Reshma, and others appear frequently in
paintings of minor tradition. Great
tradition honours Hindu Gods such as
Krishna-Radha, Shiva-Parvati, Ganesha,
Maa Durga, and others. Nonetheless,
natural scenes of villages, everyday life,
flora and fauna, which are so important
in the lives of this school of painters,
made their way into Godhna paintings.

Market Opportunities
The union ministry of textiles' office of development commissioner (handicrafts) is
collaborating with the Bihar state government to give opportunities for local
craftsmen to promote their work on various platforms. The main goal of the
learning centres that are springing up all throughout Bihar is to instil the necessary
skills in craftsmen, as well as give financial support and organise awareness-cum-
training workshops and seminars. Upendra Maharathi Handicrafts Institute in Patna
has opened a training centre that offers short-term vocational courses in
Madhubani painting in order to inspire future generations to take up this talent as a
source of income.
Market Opportunities
With respect to the primary research and interview with Mr. Amrit Singh, we clearly
understood that any craft needs to be accepted by the locals or natives first. It is
our responsibility to appreciate, encourage and buy products that bind us to the
roots of our culture.
This could be done in various ways. For eg;
Madhubani craft can be incorporated into various products such as dinnerware.
Handmade diaries, notebooks, bookmarks etc.can have Madhubani art.
Handcrafted products take time to be made. And this also results in the high
cost of the product that most of us will not want to spend on. Therefore the
introduction of minimalistic designs can be incorporated which would suit both
the consumer and the artisan.
Conclusion
Madhubani paintings, one of Bihar's most celebrated works of art, are created by
generations of skilled artists. These successfully depict all aspects of tribal life while
being vivacious and symbolic at the same time. In other words, these are the
archetypal visual representations of folk art. Madhubani paintings are a dominant
artistic expression among its peers of handicrafts made from natural resources
such as bamboo and other herbal ingredients, arts such as siki-mauni, sujni and
sitalpati, godhna, mythological sama-chakeva sculptures, and numerous other folk
art forms that are very close to the daily life style of Maithili rural peoples. In the
fashion world, there is always a demand for something novel and artistic. The
combination of Madhubani design and hand painting creates an imaginative and
fresh collection for people who want to embrace their tradition while modernising it
slightly.
