THE GAME OF BADMINTON


• Badminton is a racquet sport played using racquets to hit a
shuttlecock across a net.
• The most common forms of the game are "singles" (with one
player per side) and "doubles" (with two players per side).

• Badminton is often played as a casual outdoor activity in a yard


but formal games are played on a rectangular indoor court.
• Points are scored by striking the shuttlecock with the racquet
and landing it within the opposing side's half of the court.
• Each side may only strike the shuttlecock once before it passes
over the net.
• Play ends once the shuttlecock has struck the floor or if a fault
has been called by the umpire, service judge, or (in their absence)
the opposing side.
• Badminton is a beginner-friendly sport that anyone can start
without much hesitation.
• You need to work on some basics or fundamental badminton
skills to play the game.

HISTORY OF BADMINTON
• Badminton is derived directly from Poona, which was
played by British army officers stationed in India in the
1860s. The game was also known as Poona.
• At this point, Badminton was just a game played for fun,
and it was known as “battledore and shuttlecock” in
British India instead of Badminton.
• In 1873 the duke of Beaufort introduced the sport at his
country estate, Badminton, from which the game derives
its name.
• It is widely played in Britain, Denmark, Sweden, China,
Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea and several other countries.
• England, Scotland, Wales, Canada, Denmark, France,
Ireland, the Netherlands, and New Zealand were the
founding members of the International Badminton
Federation in 1934, now known as the Badminton World
Federation (BWF), now governs international badminton.
HISTORY OF BADMINTON IN MALAYSIA
Badminton was played in Malaysia as early as 1809. The
badminton game known as Poona at that time was played
for the first time in Pulau Pinang, by officials of the East
India Company, at the residence of Captain Francis Light.

BAM was established in Kuala Lumpur on 11 November


1934 under the name of Badminton Association of Malaya.
The Association is recognized and affiliated to world
governing body, Badminton World Federation (BWF).

Badminton had increase the image of Malaysia by won the


Thomas Cup in 1949 and 1992.
In 1953 - 1957 Eddy Choong won four All England singles
competitions.

Malaysia has participated in summer Olympic Games since


1992 and won several medals.
