Noun And Its Types
THE NAME OF ANY THING, PLACE OR
A PERSON IN KNOWN AS “NOUN”
EXAMPLES:
NY IS A BEAUTIFUL CITY.
ALI LIVES IN AMERICA.
CHAIR IS COMFORTABLE.
KINDS OF NOUN

1. PROPER NOUN
2. COMMOM NOUN
3. COLLECTIVE NOUN
4. ABSTRACT NOUN
5. MATERIAL NOUN
6. CONCRETE NOUN
7. COUNTABLE NOUN
8. UNCOUNTABLE NOUN
1. Proper Noun
• The name of a particular thing, place or a
person is called proper noun.
• Examples:
• Michael Jackson (Person)
• Lahore (Place)
• Holy Quran (Sacred Book)
2. Common Noun
• A “common noun” does not denote any
particular person, place or a thing. It is
common to all. (Common here means shared
by all)
• Examples:
• Book, pen, chair, pencil, couch, bed, table
etc…
3. Collective Noun
Collective nouns are names for a collection or a
number of people or things. Words like group,
herd are collective noun examples.
Examples:
Army, crowd, herd, fleet, jury, family,
committee, team, nation etc.
4. Abstract Noun
• Abstract noun is usually the name of a quality,
action or state. Abstract noun relates to some
quality, state or action. Abstract noun can’t be
perceived by the senses.
• Quality: Goodness, kindness, hardness,
brightness, wisdom, bravery.
• Action: Laughter, theft, movement, hatred.
• State: Childhood, boyhood, youth, slavery,
sleep, sickness, death, poverty.
5. Countable Noun

• Examples: Book, pen, apple, boy, sister, doctor,


horse etc…As it shows by its name the
countable nouns are the names of objects,
people, etc. that we can count.
6. Uncountable Noun
• Uncountable nouns are the names of things
which we cant can’t count.
• Example: Milk, oil, sugar, gold etc.
• Countable nouns have plural forms while
uncountable nouns do not.
• For example, we can say “books” but we can’t
say “milks”.
7. Material Noun

• Sugar, cement, and sand are materials, that is,


substances that could make up an object. Material
noun can be defined as “Material Noun are names of
materials or substances out of which things are
made. Ex: gold, iron, silver etc.”
• Example:
• Cotton dresses are very cheap and comfortable.
• My mom purchased a gold ring for me.
8. Concrete Noun
• A concrete noun is a noun that can be
identified through one of the five senses
(taste, touch, sight, hearing, or smell).
Consider the examples below: ... In the
sentence above, the noun phone is a concrete
noun: you can touch it, see it, hear it, and
maybe even smell it or taste it.

objects, etc.
• People: scientist, dentist, doctor, firefighter,
teacher, man, businessman, Rita, etc.
• Animals: bear, deer, fish, dog, cat, gorilla, cow,
buffalo, puppy, lion tiger, etc.
• Places: Delhi, island, Lahore, Canada, school,
park, market, Turkey, etc.
• Objects: biscuit, cake, pencil, fruit, lock, keys,
eraser, coffee cup, mobile, pizza, table, chair, etc.
