Homework 1

This document contains 8 homework problems related to dynamics for a civil engineering course. Problem 1 asks students to calculate velocities at specific distances along a straight path given an acceleration-distance graph. Problem 2 involves finding maximum velocity and displacement from an acceleration-time graph and drawing velocity-time and displacement-time graphs. Problem 3 asks students to calculate total acceleration at a point along a curved road. Problems 4-8 involve calculating velocities, accelerations, tensions, speeds, distances, and forces for various moving objects on inclined planes, circular paths, and banked tracks. Students are instructed to upload their solutions as a single PDF file by the specified deadline.

HOMEWORK 1

1) The graph of ( a − s ) is given in Fig.1 for the car in a straight way. If the velocity of the car is

v0 = 15 m / s at s = 0 , find the velocities at 50m and 250m, respectively. s A = 50 m , sB = 250 m ,

aO = 2 m/s 2

Fig. 1

2) The graph of ( a − t ) is given in Fig.2 for the car in a straight way. If the velocity of the car is v0 = 0 at
s = 0,
a) find the maximum velocity and displacement.

b) Draw the graphics of ( v − t ) and ( s − t ) between 0 − t4

t1 = 6m/s 2 , t2 = 9m/s 2 , t3 = 12 m/s 2 , t4 = 14 m/s 2 aO = 4 m/s 2 .

3) A car travels along the level curved road as shown in Fig. 3 with a speed that is decreasing at the constant
rate of 0.5 m/s2. The speed of the car as it passes point A is 15 m/s. Calculate the magnitude of the total
acceleration of the car as it passes point B which is 120 m along the road from A. The radius of curvature
of the road at B is 50 m.

4) A particle moves along a circular path of radius 300 mm. If its angular velocity is  ‘ = (3t2) rad/s, where t
is in seconds, determine the magnitudes of the particle's velocity and acceleration when =45°. The
particle starts from rest when  = 0°.

5) Determine The blocks A, B and C are connected as shown in Fig. 5. The coefficient of friction between
the block C and its plane is µs =0.3. Determine the tension of the rope.
Wa=16N
Wb =8N
Wc=10N

6) The car, having a mass of 1700 kg, travels horizontally along a 20° banked track which is circular and has
a radius of curvature of p = 100 m. If coefficient of static friction between the tires and the road is µ s = 0.2,
(Fig. 6)
a) Determine the maximum constant speed at which the car can travel without sliding up the slope.
(Neglect the size of the car.)
b) Determine the minimum speed at which the car can travel around the track without sliding down the
slope.

7) If the 60-kg skier passes point A with a speed of 5 m/s, determine his speed when he
reaches point B. Also find the normal force exerted on him by the slope at this point. Neglect
friction.

8) The 50-kg boy jumps on the 5-kg skateboard with a horizontal velocity of 5 m/s.
Determine the distance s the boy reaches up the inclined plane momentarily coming to rest.
Neglect the skateboard’s rolling resistance.
