2017 Assignment01 Vibration-Shubra

This document contains 11 questions about determining equivalent mechanical properties, such as spring constants, mass, and damping constants, for various multi-component systems. The systems include springs, masses, beams, linkages, gears, and dampers connected in various configurations. For each problem, the student is asked to calculate the equivalent property by modeling the system as a single component. Diagrams are provided for reference.

2- Find the equivalent spring constant of the system that relates the
applied force F to the resulting displacement x, In the following
two cases (a) if F is applied at point C and (b) at point D.

3- Determine the equivalent spring constant of

the system shown in Fig. P.3
4- Find the equivalent spring constant of the
system shown in Fig. P.4, in the direction of ϴ.

5- Find the equivalent torsional spring constant
of the system shown in Fig. P.5. Assume that
k1, k2, k3, and k4 are torsional and k5 and k6
are linear spring constants.

6- A machine of mass m, is mounted on a

simply supported steel beam of negligible
mass of length, l, having a rectangular cross
section area A and Young‘s modulus
E. To reduce the vertical deflection of
the beam, a spring of stiffness k is
attached at mid-span, as shown in
Fig. P.6. Determine the value of k needed to reduce the deflection
of the beam by 50 percent of its original value.
7- Find the equivalent mass of the system shown in figure. Where
the rigid link 1 is attached to the pulley and rotates with it.

8- A cam-follower mechanism shown in Fig. P.8 is used to convert
the rotary motion of a shaft into the oscillating or reciprocating
motion of a valve. The follower system consists of a pushrod of mass mp a
rocker arm of mass mr and mass moment of inertia Jr about its C.G., a valve
of mass mV and a valve spring of negligible mass. Find the equivalent mass
meq of this cam-follower system by assuming the location of meq at (i) point
A and (ii) point C.

9- Find the equivalent mass of the
rocker arm assembly shown in Fig.
P.9 with respect to the x
coordinate.

10- Two masses, having mass moments of inertia and are placed on
rotating rigid shafts that are connected by gears, as shown in
Fig.10. If their numbers of teeth on gears are, Z1 , Z2 respectively,
find the equivalent mass moment of inertia corresponding to ϴ1.
