Course III: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

ASSIGNMENT

1. The training manager at ABC Corporation has asked you to identify the kind of
training programmes that should be offered to young recruits who have joined as
management trainees and are to be imparted five additional general management
programmes along with their specific job training modules. The trainees are a
mixed bunch of engineering and management graduates.
(a) Formulate your research problem
(b)Identify the sources you would use to carry out a problem audit.
(c) State your research objectives and the research hypotheses.
2. Table below gives the number of words typed per minute by a computer assistant
on several occasions on three different desk top computers. Test whether the
difference among the means of the three samples can be attributed to chance. If
not, check the means of any one pair using independent sample t test.
Machine 1: 71 78 70 69 77 72 75 68 74
Machine 2: 74 76 72 70 69 71 70 72 68
Machine 3: 70 72 68 65 62 68 72 67 66
3. The dust scores in 5 rooms in an IC assembly unit from 5 air samples taken in
each room are given below. At the 0.05 level of significance, do the rooms have
the same average dust score?
Room 1: 5 6.5 4 7 6
Room 2: 3 6 4 4.5 3
Room 3: 1 1.5 3 2.5 4
Room 4: 8 9.5 7 6 7.5
Room 5: 1 2 3.5 1.5 3
4. The principal of an engineering college heard a rumour that GPAs in Mechanical
branch are 0.25 lower than those in Electronics and Communication. A quick
random sampling produced the following GPAs.
ME – 2.86, 2.77, 3.18, 2.8, 3.14, 2.87, 3.19, 3.24, 2.91, 3.0, 2.83, 3.19, 3.25
EC – 3.35, 3.32, 3.36, 3.41, 3.37, 3.15, 3.43, 3.13, 3.29, 3.17, 3.26, 3.18, 3.41
Do the data indicate that there is a factual basis for the rumour?
State and test the hypothesis at α = 0.01.
