TQM Reflection Paper (TQM Webinar)

The webinar was held via Zoom meeting at around 9 o’clock in the morning. The topic
was about Quality Management via International Organization for Standardization and was led
by Engr. Elmer Perez. Since it was a webinar, we were asked to listen and take some notes to
the speaker’s discussions and presentation. And as I pay attention to the discussion, I was able
to learn new things and took some important notes about the said topic. One of the things that I
was able to absorb is the ISO itself. ISO is not new to my ears as I see it everywhere such as in
products, companies and even in schools and universities. Gladly, the said webinar gave me a
broader look and gave me a define meaning of ISO. ISO is an organization that develops rules
and standards for practically all things that people use, including how products are
manufactured and how quality assurance should be conducted. ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 were
also briefly discussed as these are the most well-known standards and an be practically heard
and seen everywhere. ISO 9001 was said to help organizations to implement quality
management. It provides a structure and set of rules that provide a common-sense approach to
managing the organization so that customers and other stakeholders are consistently satisfied.
ISO 14001 on the other hand helps organizations to implement environmental management.
Also, it is the fundamental management system standard that lays out the requirements for
creating and maintaining an EMS. Management systems were also explained, it is the process
by which an organization controls the interconnected aspects of its business in order to attain its
goals These goals might be related to a variety of subjects, such as product or service quality,
operational efficiency, environmental performance, workplace health and safety, and so on. The
accreditation and certification were also explained to us. The said certification is not a
requirement of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 as they can implement them for the internal benefits
without spending money on a certification program. In the last part of the discussion, some
benefits of significance of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 were tackled.
As the discussion progresses, some benefits and significance were discussed. The first
one is the significance of standards. A quote was given to us stating, “When standards are
absent, we soon notice.” This means that standards are in place to ensure desirable
characteristics of products and services including quality, environmental friendliness, safety,
reliability, efficiency, and interchangeability—all at a reasonable cost. ISO is also important to us
since it allows us to have interoperable equipment, meet consumer requirements, implement
quality improvement programs, and comply with external regulatory standards. Standards are
set because it benefits basically everyone including our planet itself. From the goods we use
and services we take from business, quality of education we get from schools, to technologies
and software we use in the internet, standards are being applied and followed to maintain a
quality that’ll benefit everyone. Because without these standards, we can’t guarantee that we’ll
live harmoniously and not cause issues with everything we do, use and say.
The said conference gave me a broader knowledge about Quality management
especially in ISO. I learned that these certain ISO guidelines are the one responsible in
maintaining quality of such wide variety of products and services. And these are the reasons
why we continue to consume things that live up to our expectations and being able to live in a
lifestyle we want, such as in products we use and services we get. But one thing I realized is
that having standards n certain things is important. As how it’s important for the produce we use
as consumers. Personally, we should have standards that we should live up to, to avoid
conflicts and confusions in our daily interaction with the people around us. Even to ourselves,
we should have standards as because these standards ae ways and method for us to achieve
our personal plans and goals in our lives.
