Admixture Redosing and Setting Time Test of Concrete
Admixture Redosing and Setting Time Test of Concrete
I want to share few technical points with respect to addition of admixture at site:-
Redosing of admixture at site: - Once vehicle reaches to site & if the slump of concrete is found
lessen than required (i.e. 100mm), and then site people should use redosing procedure. This
redosing procedure should be done after consulting with QC In charge of respective plant or
QC In charge of particular site. The care should be taken that it should not cross the maximum
permissible limit. When the slump of the concrete is less than required at that time redosing is
permissible as per I.S 4926 Clause No.4.5.5
Using redosing of admixture in concrete, normally it does not affect any strength parameter.
Only care should be taken while adding the admixture in concrete.
1. Maximum allowable total dosage of admixture normally is 2 percent as per I.S. by weight of
cementations materials. We normally permit for 1.6% maximum dosage. Based on the
dosage mixed at plant, calculate the maximum dosage allowable at site.
2. The dosage for M50 design mix is 1.1% at plant. We are going to use same type of admixture
as those used in concrete production for redosing purpose at site.
3. Try using concrete at 120±25 mm slump. This will eliminate the chances of increase in water-
cement ratio, if used within given timeframe.
4. While adding admixture into the transit mixer, a nominal amount of water should be added
to allow for good dispersion of chemical admixture into the concrete mass. Normally
adopted ratio is 1:1. Slight addition of water (up to 3-5 kg/cum) will not lead to any major
change in w-c ratio, because approximately the same amount of water would have been
lost during transit due to absorption and evaporation.
5. After the addition of admixture into the concrete in the transit mixer, rotate the drum at 8-12
rpm for at least 30 revolutions for full load, and no less than 15 revolutions for part loads to
ensure uniform mixing.
6. It is a good idea to estimate the approximate time to be taken in emptying the transit mixer
in advance and modify the slump in the beginning, rather than trying to add admixture after
part of the delivery has been unloaded and the slump has been dropped.
We have determined the setting time of M50 grade of concrete by using penetration resistance
method as per IS 8142 and details of same are as below:-
Penetration
Time in Min.
resistance
Initial Setting Time 230 3.43
Final Setting Time 435 26.97
With use of 1.1 % dosage of admixture initial setting time is 230 min. and final setting time is 435
min.
We have added additional admixture dosage by 0.2% in regular M50 grade of concrete and
determined the setting time of concrete by using penetration resistance method as per IS 8142
and details of same are as below:-
Penetration
Time in Min.
resistance
Initial Setting Time 315 3.43
Final Setting Time 560 26.97
After additional of admixture by 0.2%, with use of 1.3 % dosage of admixture initial setting time is
315 min. and final setting time is 560 min.
