10.4. Learning Task 4.1 Scientism

Science has greatly benefited humanity through increasing agricultural productivity, faster communication and travel, space exploration, and medical advances like drugs that prevent and cure sickness. However, science alone does not solve issues or dictate morality - it is up to humans to decide how scientific knowledge is applied and action is taken based on understanding. While science has brought much progress, it also could harm society if its discoveries are misused or abused, so a balanced approach relying on multiple ways of knowing is important.

Without a doubt, science leads to something beneficial to society, but this is not always

the case. Science is concerned with collecting and comprehending observations of the physical
world. Science has provided facts and knowledge, but the ultimate purpose is to spread
knowledge and consciousness. It is up to humans to decide how they will apply that information
to their own benefit. It will be beneficial to society if it leads to progress and development, but it
will be detrimental if it causes difficulties and harm to others. Science introduced light into the
world, and it has continued to brighten as new discoveries and developments have been made
throughout the years. Its value to our society is immeasurable; looking back, things were
substantially different, and it continues to impact our lives. Science provides scientific answers
to questions. It provided an answer, but it is up to us to decide whether or not we will apply that
information to a specific problem. Individuals must act on their understanding; understanding
does not solve issues by itself, and action should be shown.
Science has benefited humanity. Science is addressing world hunger by increasing
agricultural productivity. Because of technology, communication is faster, travel is faster, and
space exploration is possible. Many drugs have been discovered that prevent and cure sickness,
and equipment that can be utilized in medical care has been invented that allows us to live
longer. None of this would be feasible without some type of science. On the other side, some
scientific items might have a detrimental influence if they are misused or abused. As I already
stated, it is constantly changing human life. Technology has been shown to be extremely
beneficial to mankind. Despite its widespread use, many of us abuse and misappropriate it. As
the saying goes, too much of a good thing can be dangerous.

To think deeply, no one relies exclusively on science, people rely on many things. The
danger, I'm saying, is that people who do not rely on scientific and philosophic methods and
foundations. In the video of C.S. Lewis, he was not anti-science but opposed to scientism.
Scientism is defined as the "wrong-headed belief that modern science is the only reliable method
of knowledge about the world, and also that scientists should be the ones to dictate public policy
and even our moral and religious beliefs simply on the basis of their scientific expertise." One
approach for society to escape the traps of scientism is to base science on itself. Science is
powerful because it can be applied to almost anything. Science is fact-based knowledge that
illuminates the world.
