BRIEF INTRODUCTION

The history of internet the internet began in the people’s desire to build and
interconnect computer networks. At that time, it is very much needed in the research and
development in the United States, United Kingdom, and France. It allowed these countries to
experience international collaboration.

Basic Web Terminologies

 Network – refers to multiple computers connected together and can communicate with
one another sharing resources like data, information, and hardware
 Internet – is a worldwide collection of computers that connects computer systems
either wired or wireless
 World Wide Web (www) – also called the Web, is the combination of all resources and
information on the Internet
 Web Page – is a formatted page within a website which makes up the World Wide
Web and is written in HTML (hypertext markup language). It may contain text, graphics,
video, and multimedia. This page can be viewed using a program called web browser.
 Home Page – is the first web page that appears upon opening a website. It serves as
the starting point of a website. It usually contains information about the purpose and
contents of a website and provides links to its other pages.

History of the Internet

The history of Internet started when the United

States Government launched their project called DARPA
(Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). It is an
agency of the US Department of Defense established in
1958 intended to develop new technology for military use.
This agency was first called ARPA (Advanced Research
Projects Agency) then was later renamed to DARPA. The
said agency was headed by J.C.R. Licklider in 1962. He is
installed three computer network terminals – one for the DARPA Headquarters

5
University of California, Berkely for the Project Genie, one for System Development
Corporation in Santa Monica, USA, and one at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
for Time-Sharing System projects for advanced computer and networking research. The
networking technology helped the development of “packet switching”, a network
communication method that splits data into small chunks, called packets, then combined again
in its original order at its destination.

The head of the Information Processing Office of DARPA,

Robert Taylor worker with Larry Roberts of MIT to initiate the
project called ARPANET to build a working computer network.
They made four interconnected computers which were located in
University of California, Los Angeles, Stanford Research Institute,
University of Utah, and University of California in Santa Barbara.
ARPANET was the main contributor to the development of internet.
The computers located in different places became hosts and
operated as servers that provided services in communicating to
other computers in the network. The initial exchange of information
was limited to government and academic research but when the
significance of the project became evident, the number of computer
hosts increased significantly. As of now, almost a billion host
computers are connected to the internet. ARPANET first router

In 1976, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) developed the packet

switching network standards following the research from DARPA called X.25. The
CompuServe used the X.25 standard which made them the first company to offer electronic
mail for personal computer users. There were also several network methods developed but
they were eventually needed to be unified. Robert E. Kahn of DARPA recruited Vinton Cerf of
Stanford University to come up with a solution to the said problem. Cerf, with the help of other
scientists, formulated a common internetwork protocol, which eventually became the TCP/IP
protocol. This is also the only approved standard protocol on the ARPANET.

In 2001, the Draper prize award was given to Robert E. Kahn, Vinton Cerf, Lawrence
Roberts, and Leonard Kleinrock in recognition for the development of the internet. Draper prize
is the annual award given by the National Academy of Engineering.

Eventually, the internet network was turned over to the Defense Communication
Agency from DARPA to serve its original purpose of advancing research and development.
ARPANET was replaced by newer and more advanced networking technologies in the 1990s.
The NSF (National Science Foundation) Net was later renamed as ANSNET (Advanced
Network and Services). It handled the immense internet traffic, but it terminated the network
in 1994 which opened opportunities for commercial to providers and
the for the government to provide volumes of network backbones and
interconnections on the internet. At present, the Internet is a globally
wide and complex network of computers and it is neither owned or
controlled by any company, organization or person. It is deemed to be
a public property wherein anyone can access, explore, contribute, and
use. However, standards and controls are essential to ensure its ICANN logo
effective and efficient function. These standards and controls are

being managed by Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). They are
responsible in assigning unique identifiers used in the internet such as domain names, internet
protocols (IP), address and other parameters.

History of the World Wide Web

The World Wide Web started in 1989 by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, a

British computer scientist. He was born in London and his parents were
also early computer scientists who worked on one of the earliest
computers.

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an organization at MIT

(Massachusetts Institute of Technology). It was founded and still headed
by Lee. Several companies willingly participate in its aim to create Sir Time Berners-Lee
standards and ways to improve quality of the web. W3C intends to provide access to the World
Wide Web on the principle of no patent, no royalty due, and easily adoptable to everyone.
W3C has also set the standards for HTML, XHTML, CSS, and many other internet
applications.
