1 Introduction
The Tan Delta Configuration and Data Software (CADS) is used to configure our core products,
the Oil Condition Sensor (OQSxG2), Oil Quality Display Express (OQDe) and Oil Quality Display
Professional (OQDp). These products have a range of configurable parameters, allowing you to
create a bespoke system for virtually any application.

2 Measuring Oil Quality
There are a number of ways to describe oil wear and oil condition. The Tan Delta system offers
three methods:
Tan Delta Number
Loss Factor Percentage
Oil Quality Index
NOTE: We introduced the concept of the Oil Quality Index (OQI) to create a common
language for describing overall oil wear and oil condition. It makes it easier to monitor,
quantify and trend oil condition and it can be combined with other methods such as ISO
cleanliness levels and laboratory test results. However, we recommend that new users
adopt the TDN scale as it is more intuitive.
2.1 Tan Delta Number
The Tan Delta OQSxG2 measures the Loss Factor Percentage of oil (see below). The OQDe
converts this into a Tan Delta Number (TDN) which is a scale running from 1200 (upper limit) to
0 (lower limit). New oil will have a value of approximately 0900 and the number will fall as the
oil condition deteriorates. You can set warning and alarm levels anywhere on this scale.
When new, the Clean Point for most oils will generally be between 0950 and 0850 on the TDN
scale. The actual value will depend on several factors but most importantly how pure the base
stock is and what additive packages have been included. During use, as the oil deteriorates,
TDN value will decrease.
Oil wear is not linear, it tends to follow an exponential curve, therefore any initial change in
wear and/or contamination will tend to be slow, however, as the wear and/or contamination
increases, the rate at which the oil degrades will increase.
NOTE: The TDN does not start at 1000 for a new, clean oil, as some oils can be improved by
using sophisticated on-line or off-line filtration. An oil can also improve on the TDN scale,
as well as deteriorate.
2.2 Loss Factor
A clean oil has a Loss Factor Percentage of approximately 0% and then as the oil changes and
degrades this Loss Factor Percentage increases. For most applications, oil would be considered
to be degraded at a Loss Factor Percentage of 25% and at the “end of life” at a Loss Factor
Percentage of 30% or above.
2.3 Oil Quality Index
The OQI measurement scale (-2 to +21) offers a ‘traffic light’ view of oil quality. There is a
green section (1-13), an amber section (14-17) and a red section (18-20) to mark OK, Warning
and Alarm thresholds respectively. This is an older scale which has been mostly phased out,
inclusion in this guide is for legacy customers.

You will have a list of options for the device you want to connect the sensor to:
Figure 8 Communication Options
Oil Quality Display Express – This sets the sensor to use our proprietary RS485
communications protocol.
Oil Quality Display Professional – This sets the sensor to CANbus, please ensure sensors
are correctly numbered from 1-4 (OQD Professional) or 1-10 (OQT Gateway) and
uniquely named (1-7 characters).
Oil Quality Telemetry Gateway – This sets the sensor to CANbus for use with our
modem/router. Ensure sensors are uniquely numbered from 1-10.
Custom Communications Settings – Allows you to select custom node ID and bit rate for
RS485, CANbus, J1939, Modbus.
Note: CANbus Self Starting allows the sensor to power up straight into Operational mode
and begin sending Process Data Object (PDO) responses without validation from a CANopen
master so the sensor can be used on systems without a full CANopen master.
4.1.4 Advanced Settings
If you have a version 3 sensor, an extra setting is available from the sensor config page –
advanced settings. Clicking this link will show the following settings:
Figure 9 Advanced Settings
2018© Tan Delta Systems Limited Page | 8
This function uses hysteresis to reduce the noise caused by changes in the oil such as
temperature. In order for the algorithms to settle the sensor must go through at least one
‘thermal cycle’ of the application, this just means running the machine from standby until it
reaches its highest normal operating temperature.
We recommend you start with the filter disabled and run the sensor in-situ for a few weeks
(definitely over a few thermal cycles of the application). If the data is relatively smooth leave
the smoothing disabled, if not, enable the smoothing.
Note: If you are using the sensor with the OQDp you must set the Node ID, numbered 1-4.
For use with OQTg, Node ID must be set, numbered 1-10.
Once your required settings are selected, use the arrow to navigate to the next page.
4.1.5 Oil Configuration
This page allows you to select any oil from our database. The boxes at the top of each column
allow you to either search or filter the database with the drop-down menu or by typing directly
into the box.
If the oil you require is not in the database, please contact [email protected] for
assistance.
Figure 10 Oil Selector
Once your required oil profile is selected, use the arrow to proceed. A pop-up message will
request confirmation that new settings should be sent to the sensor. Once confirmed, the
settings will be written to the sensor.
Note: Do not disconnect sensor until CADS has displayed confirmation that the
configuration has been successful.
