ABSTRACT:

Technology plays a very important role in Everyone’s life , it has become the need for the life for today’s
society. A very innovative and important need is to create a smart home that controls operation and turns ON
and OFF electronic devices via a smart phone. In this modern world People carry smart phones everywhere
and operations on smart phone is easy.
All these years operation of electric devices were through switches (turning the switches ON and OFF). The
smart home design is done by simulation concept and package tracking software that operates by IoT
functions that control and simulate smart homes .It indicates lighting ,cooling ,alarming ,heating of appliances
remotely.
I implemented smart home using Cisco packet tracer simulator ( all the IoT applications are included in the
new version). The latest version includes sensor ,board, IoE device and programming languages with
equipped networking device .In the smart home that I have designed have included devices such as Fan,
Window ,Door, Air conditioner, Furnace, Lawn Sprinkler, Bulb, Siren and Sensing devices such as Wind
detector ,motion detector, Thermostat, Humiture monitor, Smoke detector. It is monitored by a Smart phone
with a predefined configuring conditions. Smart homes can help to increase energy efficiency, damage costs
and change the role of residents.

1.INTRODUCTION:
1.1IoT:
Internet of things or commonly known as IoT is system of Mechanical and digital machines ,objects ,animals
or people, computing devices are interrelated and are provided with unique identifiers(UID’s) .IoT is
fabricating or interconnecting the world around us more smarter and more responsive. Organizations in a
variety of industries are using IoT to function more efficiently , better understanding to the customers about
the enhanced customer service , improves decision making and quality of business is developed.

1.1a Working of IoT:

IoT is defined as an Ecosystem which consists of Web enabled smart devices that use embedded systems such
as Sensors ,processors and communication hardware to collect , send and act on data acquired from the
environments. The data collected is sent to an edge device such as the IoT gateway (that acts as a hub point)
where data is either sent to the cloud and analysed or it is analysed locally. These devices function without
human intervention but people can also interact with the device(To set them up and give them instructions to
access the data). There are specific IoT applications that are deployed which helps or controls the web enabled
devices to access Connectivity, Communication and Networking protocols. In order to make the data
collecting processes more dynamic IoT takes the assistance of AI( Artificial Intelligence and Machine
learning.

1.1b Need for IoT:

It helps us live a more easier and smarter life. In addition to smart home applications IoT also plays a major
role in business with a real time look into how systems actually work. It automate processes and reduce labour
costs to a great extent , decreases wastes and making it less expensive to manufacture and deliver goods fast
and offer transparency to the customers .It helps in generating more revenue, integrate and adapt business
models.

1.1c Advantages of IoT’s:

1. It allows Devices to stay connected and better communication for better quality control.
2. Machine to Machine interaction provides better efficiency
3. It leads to uniformity in tasks.
4. Simplifies the decision making process.

1.1d Drawbacks of IoT’s:

1. It is a vast and diverse network so a single failure in either the hardware or the software can have
dangerous consequences.
2. Employment opportunities are reduced.
3. It is less compatible.
4. The information is readily available so the confidential data is prone to reach the hackers and
unauthorised users easily.
1
1.2 Cisco packet tracer:
A packet tracer is a software designed by Cisco systems that acts as a cross platform to aid users in
imitating modern Computing Networks and creating computing topologies .It is a Cisco multi platform
simulation tool to allow learners to simulate networks .It helps generating IoT platforms. It offers a frag
and drop style interference.
Objectives:
1. Provides realistic visualization and simulation of IoT devices.
2. Allows students to explore IoT concepts.
3. Used as a learning aid among students.
4. Helps to design complex networks.

1.2a Working of Cisco Packet Tracer:

It offers two modes of operation Real time mode and Simulation mode. In real time mode the tracer acts
like the real devices do while in simulation mode the students get to control the time intervals , change the
inner workings of data transfer and controls the propagation of data

1.2b Advantages of Cisco packet tracer :

1. It is a powerful Network simulation program.
2. It enables students in the networking field to experiment with the Troubleshooting programs without
physically investing on a number of switches and routers.
3. It helps to create networks with maximum number of devices.

1.2c Limitations of Cisco packet tracer:

1. It offers smaller number of functions.
2. Limited number of commands making it unfit to operate on modelling production models.
3. Deploys the network in real life.

1.3 Smart Home:

A smart home is a residence that uses Internet connected devices to enable the remote monitoring and
management.
Need for a smart home
1.Saves Energy and money : Connected appliances such as lights ,fans, Air conditioners etc may use
less energy when powering down when not in use.
2.Comfort: The devices may turn ON/OFF using voice commands, location rules, sensor detection or
even simple schedules.
3. Security and safety: By using alarm systems such as sirens, Connected lights , cameras and even door
bells can help to make a home safer. If someone is home alone and if a stranger tries to sneak in these
devices might scare them.
4. Handling household tasks: It manages the working of all electrical home appliances.
2
1.4 Methodology:

Smartphone and Home gateway are used to control the devices such as smart window, smart fan, smart
light, garbage and sensor , the devices are connected to the Home gateway and it is in turn connected to
the smart phone. The Home gateway has four Ethernet ports and wireless access point configured with the
“Home gateway” service set identifier (SSID). All the devices are connected to gateway using
configuration menu in each device, the name of the gateway is entered. It procedure is used to configure all
the devices used t. Ip menu displays the list of devices that are connected to the home gateway.

The Cisco packet tracer interface has inbuilt devices (all the devices and networks) that are added in the
model .To authenticate and validate the wireless connection we also configure home gateway with
WEP/WPA-PSK/WPA2 protocols. To connect a device , we click on the device and it configured to home
gateway with a default address 192.168.25.1 and through the advanced settings by selecting the Ip/Op port
PT-IOT-NW-1W the device is given wireless connection.

The basic model of the smart home is completely controlled by a smart phone that is a person who is the
operator controls or operates the switching and regulation of devices but to make it more automatic we can
use sensors or Detectors that constantly measures a particular parameter ( say temperature) and Indicators
( such as Alarms) that indicates or rises when the parameters are sensed beyond the fixed values. This
accomplished by giving conditions.

3
1.5 Merits and Demerits:
Merits:
1. The smart home is Energy efficient. These devices help us to conserve energy around our home. From
energy monitoring to lowering the temperature of our home while we are away. Some devices also
indicate the amount of energy gained or released and can be digitally displayed.
Ex: Smart plugs have the energy monitoring feature.
2. Smart homes are customizable that is they can be as complex or simple as we choose. There is really
no one size that fit all solutions here. Whether we want to take advantage of one device or thirty, it is
completely up to us and all are completely acceptable.
3. It is highly convenient as it comes in many sizes ,it adds up and allows our homes to run more
efficiently.
4. It is highly safe and Information are secure. The sensors used will even be able to provide
Notifications when movement is sensed and a live stream to our home to check it out.
5. One of the best advantages is that the ability to set routines. Routine is an action that acts off other
actions within the connected home.
6. The system is easy to use and maintain.

7. Smart authentication techniques is not just limited to home applications.

Ex: Smart cities, ALEXA connected to Cars.
8. Self monitoring security and they come up with decent monthly electrical bills.

Demerits :
1. Initial installation cost is high.
2. It is highly reliant on Internet, any interruption in the internet connection may cause abruption in thr
whole system observation.
3. There are more Security and Technical threads.
4. It offers no global protocol.
Ex: Language Hindrance.
5. One vulnerable component in the system may cause the whole system to misfunction.
