MFML - Lesson Plan in Mathematics 8, Q2-Illustrating A Relation and A Function

The document outlines a lesson plan for illustrating relations and functions using various methods such as mapping diagrams, tables of values, graphs, and rules or equations. It provides sample problems for students to practice representing relations using these different methods and defines what a relation is versus a function. The lesson aims to help 75% of students be able to define and illustrate relations and functions by the end of the session.

LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 8

Quarter 2, Week 3

I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the session, 75% of the students must be able to:

1. define a relation and a function ;

2. illustrate the relation using (a) mapping diagram, (b) table of values, (c) graph and (d) rule or
equation; and
3. cooperation in one’s work.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Illustrating a Relation and a Function
References: Mathematics – Grade 8 Quarter 2 – Module 5: Illustrating a Relation and a
Function, Mathematics 8 Learner’s Material
Materials: SLMs, Task card, PowerPoint presentation/ Video Lesson/ visual aids
Strategies: Cooperative Learning (Group Activity, Think-Pair-Share), Differentiated Learning,
Blended Learning
Pre-Requisite Concepts: Linear equation, ordered pair, coordinate system, set
MELC with Code: illustrates a relation and a function- M8AL-IIc-1

III. PROCEDURE
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT’S ACTIVITY
A. Drill

Read the situation carefully and answer

the given question.

You and your father harvested

your farm’s produce. You have kept all the
fruits and vegetables in one sack since
you have forgotten to bring two sacks.
Upon arriving home, your father told you
to separate the fruits, vegetables and root
crops. Below are the yields which you and
your father were able to get.
mango, cabbage, sweet potato,
banana
Guava, cassava and petchay

You have separated the yields in

the manner below:
Vegetables: cabbage, petchay
Fruits: mango, banana, guava
Root Crops: cassava, sweet
potato

Given the separated yields, write Answers:

your answers as ordered pairs. ( cabbage , vegetable ), ( petchay , vegetable ),
( mango , fruit ), ( banana , fruit ), (guava , fruit),
( cassava , root crop) ( sweet potato , root crop )
B. Lesson Proper
1. Activity (Group Activity)

Note: Divide the class into 4 groups

considering the different group of
learners such as the advanced learners
and average learners.

1
Then Each group will answer the given
task/s for 5 - 7 minutes and let one
representative to present their work to
the whole class.

Group 1 Answer:
Consider the set of ordered pairs and Table of Values
represent it using table of values.
{(𝟎, 𝟔), (𝟏, 𝟓), (𝟐, 𝟒), (𝟑, 𝟑), (𝟒, 𝟐)}

Group 2 Answer:
Consider the set of ordered pairs and Rule or Equation
represent it using rule or equation. x+y=6
{(𝟎, 𝟔), (𝟏, 𝟓), (𝟐, 𝟒), (𝟑, 𝟑), (𝟒, 𝟐)}
x = 6 − y or y = −x + 6

Group 3 Answer:
Consider the set of ordered pairs and Mapping Diagram
represent it using mapping diagram.
{(𝟎, 𝟔), (𝟏, 𝟓), (𝟐, 𝟒), (𝟑, 𝟑), (𝟒, 𝟐)}

Group 4 Answer:
Consider the set of ordered pairs and Graph
represent it using graph.
{(𝟎, 𝟔), (𝟏, 𝟓), (𝟐, 𝟒), (𝟑, 𝟑), (𝟒, 𝟐)} .

2. Analysis
Answer: The set of ordered pairs consists of pair of
a. How do you write the set of
elements that occur in a particular order and are
ordered pairs?
enclosed in brackets.
This can be written as {(x1,y1), (x2,y2), (x3,y3) …}.

Answer: The elements belong to the first set

b. What elements belong to the first
are the set of 𝑥 values called domain or inputs while
set?
the elements belong to the second set are the set
What elements belong to the
second set? of y values called range or outputs.

c. How many elements are there in Answer: There are 5 elements in the given set of
the given set of ordered pairs? ordered pair.

d. How do we illustrate/ represent a Answer: We can illustrate a relation and a function

relation and a function? using (a) mapping diagram, (b) table of values, (c)
graph and (d) rule or equation

3. Abstraction
Answer: The relation defines the relationship
1. What is a relation? What is a between sets of values of ordered pairs while
function? function is a relation for which each value from the
set ,the first components of the ordered pairs is

2
associated with exactly one value from the set of
second components of the ordered pair.

All RELATIONS are functions but not all

FUNCTIONS are relation.
2. How do we illustrate/ represent There are four ways to represent a relation and a
a relation and a function? function:
1. Mapping diagram- this shows how the
elements are paired. It consists of two
Note: Let the students watch the video columns. The first one contains the x-values
lesson about illustrating a relation and a while the second one contains the y-values.
function. Arrows are used to show the relation of the
two.
2. Table of values - The table describes clearly
the behavior of the value of 𝑦 as the value
of 𝑥 changes.
This can be drawn horizontally or vertically.
3. Graph- The graph of a relation is the set
of all points whose coordinates (𝑥, 𝑦) satisfy
𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥).
This means that for each 𝑥-value there is a
corresponding 𝑦-value.
4. Rule or equation - This method is a
mathematical statement describing the
relation of the 𝑥-values and 𝑦-values and
can be written in terms of x or in terms of y.
4. Application “Think-Pair-Share”
Note: Let the students choose their pair
in answering the activity.

1. Given the graph, show the relation as;

c. {(−5, −3), (−3,3), (−2,5), (−1,3)}

2. Illustrate the relation describe by the

rule
x = y + 2 using table of values, set of
ordered pairs and mapping diagram.
a. Assign values of 𝑦. Substitute it to the Answers:
given rule to determine the 𝑥- value. a.
x=y+2 x 0 1 2 3
X y -2 -1 0 1
Y -2 -1 0 1

b. Write the ordered pairs in a set.
