2. Three students and two teachers attend a conference at Statistics Canada. They
pose for a picture. In how many ways can they line up if they must have the
teachers on both sides of the picture? [3A]

3! x 2! = 12 ways
If they have teachers on both sides of the picture then they can be arranged in 12 ways.

3. How many 5-digit numbers can be formed using all the digits 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, such
that the number is odd and greater than 40 000? [4A]

The given digits are 1,2,3,4 and 5 which are 5 in number. As the number 40000 has five
digits and the numbers greater than 40000 are to be formed by using each of the given
digit only once, the numbers of only five digits are to be formed. Ten thousands place can
be filled up by any of the digits 4 or 5 in 2 different ways.
Remaining 4 places can be filled up by the remaining 4 digits in 4P4 ways. ⇒ The required

number of numbers=2×4P4= 2×4! = 2×4×3×2×1 = 48

𝑛−1)!
4. Solve: ( = 20 [4K]
(𝑛−3)!

(n-1)! / (n-3)! = 20 = (5x4x3x2x1) / 3x2x1

(n-1)! / (n-3)! = (5!)/(3!)
n-1 = 5
n=6

n-3=3
n=6
hence the value of n is 6
