Summary
This is a summary of the TED Lecture “10 Ways to have a better
conversation” by Celeste Headlee. In this lecture, the speaker highlighted the
importance of conversational competence in our life. Celeste Headlee has
presented 10 ways of developing this skill. The speaker mentioned the following
tips: 1. Do not multitask, 2. Do not pontificate, 3. Use open-ended questions, 4. Go
with the flow, 5. Confess that you do not know something, 6. Do not equate your
experience with others, 7. Do not repeat yourself, 8. Stay out of the weeds, 9.
Listen, 10. Be brief. All of them will work to make your conversation better.
Firstly, the main idea of her lecture was to teach people how to talk and how
to listen. Therefore, it is worth to draw the connection between the lecture and
would-be teachers’ job. It requires every day, live communication. Would-be
teacher should know not only how to teach, but also how to listen to the children,
their difficulties and problems, it is how interaction works. However, it is
necessary to challenge the speaker’s idea to keep the mouth shut as often as it
possibly can. Without responding the fluent conversation will not go. All in all, the
speaker has coped with her initial purpose and these tips will be useful for
everyone.
