Abarientos - Acot103-Assignment 3

This document contains an assignment with two questions regarding confidence intervals. Question 1 asks the student to calculate the 95% and 99% confidence intervals of the mean number of jobs retired men had based on sample data. The 95% confidence interval is smaller since it has a smaller z-value and margin of error. Question 2 asks the student to determine the 95% confidence interval of the mean hours of TV kindergarteners watch based on sample data. It then asks if a parent's claim that their children watched 4000 hours is believable given the confidence interval, which it is not.

ACOT103 Assignment 3

Department of Mathematics October 27, 2021

College of Science and Engineering 1st Semester, SY 2021–2022

Last Name  First Name  Signature  Score

ABARIENTOS MAE LOU FRIA BARBOSA 20

General Instructions: This assignment is worth 20 points. Answer ALL items. Work alone and
show your complete solutions. You have until November 10, 2021 (3:00 PM) to submit your
work. Good luck!

1. A sociologist found that in a sample of 50 retired men, the average number of jobs they had
during their lifetimes was 7.2. The population standard deviation is 2.1.

(a) Find the best point estimate. (2 points)

Given sample size (n) = 50
Sample mean (X̄) = 7.2
Standard deviation (σ) = 2.1

> The best point estimate of the mean is the sample mean which is the (X̄) = 7.2
(b) Find the 95% confidence interval of the mean number of jobs. (5 points)

> Solution:
Z = 1.96
E = 1.96 (2.1 / √ 50 = .58
7.2 – 1.96 (2.1 / √ 50) < µ < 7.2 + 1.96 (2.1 / √ 50)
6.62 < µ < 7.78

(c) Find the 99% confidence interval of the mean number of jobs. (5 points)

> Solution:
Z = 2.58
E = 2.58 (2.1 / √ 50 = .77
7.2 – 2.58 (2.1 / √ 50) < µ < 7.2 + 2.58 (2.1 / √ 50)
6.43 < µ < 7.97

(d) Which is smaller? Explain why. (3 points)

> The 95% confidence interval is smaller, because margin of error is smaller.
The value added and subtracted from the mean is smaller when the z value is smaller.
2. A study of 415 kindergarten students showed that they have seen on average 5000 hours of
television. If the sample standard deviation of the population is 900, find the 95% confidence
level of the mean for all students. If a parent claimed that his children watched 4000 hours,
would the claim be believable? (5 points)

Solution:
Given:
x̄ = 5,000
σ = 900
n = 415
Confidence interval = 95%
Z = +- 1.96

 a = 0.05
a = 0.05
2
= 0.025
 1 – 0.025 = 0.975  Z = +- 1.96

 = 5,000 +- 1.96 ( 900 / √ 415 )

= 5,000 +- 1.96 ( 44.18 )
= 5,000 +- 86.991
= 5,086.591 or 5,087

4,913 < µ < 5,807

**The claim is not believable since with 95% confidence, by the time a child is
in kindergarten, the child has watched TV between 4,193 to 5,087 hours.
