Windows Operating System was developed by Microsoft by integrating the DOS and
windows feature. In order to give a user-friendly environment, all applications running under
this environment essentially use similar operations thereby ensuring that the user is comfortable
in the basic handling of all applications. The productivity, thus, goes up appreciably and the
ease to master and use features of the Operating System leads to lesser reliance on technicians.

Windows XP has improved upon security, including the new security center, which
allows you to check the status of the important security elements on your computer – windows
firewall, Automatic Updates, and virus protection software – making it easier for you to
understand how to keep your computer better protected against viruses and other security
threats. Performance is at an all-time high. You can now use more programs at the same time
and they will run faster than ever. Windows XP is dependable and stable, so you can always
rely on the performance and effectiveness of your computer.
Improvements have been made on many features that make using your computer more
effective and useful. For example, you can use Remote Desktop to access your work computer
and its resources from home, and to view files and documents on your computer’s desktop from
a co-worker’s computer. With Net meeting you can have virtual meetings with anyone,
anywhere, and you can participate in discussions using audio, video, or chat. Getting help has
never been easier.
With Remote Assistance, you just send an invitation (either in e-mail or instant
messenger) to your favorite computer expert or support professional, and they can help you fix
a problem from their location. Windows XP provides extensive online help for all operating
system features, as well as a digital tour to help you discover the possibilities awaiting you.

MY HOME
The four-room flat in Toa Payoh has been home to my family for six years. It is only a
five-minute walk from my school and we are used to life in this estate.
38
Although the flat is not very big, it is cozy and quiet. It is a sanctuary where we can
relax and find our own space. In our home, we enjoy temporary relief from the pressure of
office and school.
The moment you step into the flat, you will be struck by a pretty centerpiece made of
seashells. It is placed on an antique table under a landscape painting. The décor in the hall
changes with the seasons; during Chinese New Year, we place calligraphy scrolls and cherry
blossoms to brighten up the place ; around Christmas, you can see a gaily decorated fir tree in
one corner of the hall.
As my father is a keen gardener, you can see pots of indoor plants placed near the door.
The trophies collected by the children are displayed in a low cupboard together with
knickknacks, such as soft toys, preserved butterflies and a set of Fu Lu Shou figurines.
The bedrooms, including the master bedroom, are painted in pastel shades to set a
relaxing mood. Curtains and cushion covers, bedspreads and cabinets are kept to these tones.
I am lucky to have a room to myself and I was allowed to choose the colour of my room.
I opted for olive green – my favorite color. There is a study table where I do my homework and
a portable television set for relaxation. Near my bed is a glass-paneled display cabinet to hold
dozens of little souvenirs. I love all these cute souvenirs. It gives me so much pleasure to take
them out once in a while and admire or clean them. They bring back special memories each
time.
The kitchen is Mother’s domain. It is kept spotlessly clean and anyone who spills food
on the floor is sure to get a good scolding. It is fitted with blue wall cabinets which harmonize
with the grey wall tiles.
Although few would give my home a second glance, we are proud of it. It may not be a
mansion but, all the same, it is home sweet home to us.
