Summary - Reaction Paper Essay of The Direct Method
SUMMARY:
The Direct-Method like the Grammar_Translation Method is not new. It is an old
method that has been used by languages teacher for a long time. Shortly ago, it was
revived as a method when the goal of intruction became learning how to use another
language to communicate. Provided that the Grammar_ Translation Method was not
that good for preparing the student to utilize the target language commmunicatively,
the Direct Method became very known or popular.
The Direct Method is based on one very basic rule: No translation is allowed. As matter
of fact, the Direct Method receives its name from the fact that meaning is to be
conveyed directly in the target language through the usage of demonstration and
visual aids, with no recourse to the students’ native language.
In the Direct- Method reading in the target language should be taught from the
beginning of language instruction; however, the reading skillwill be developed through
practice with speaking. Language is primarily speech.Culture consists of more than the
fine arts (e.g. in this lesson we observed the students studying geography and cultural.
In this Method the main activities include reading aloe dialogues and repetitions of
model sentences. Key structures from the dialogue serve as the basis for pattern drills
of different kinds. Lessons in the classroom faces on the correct imitation of the
teacher by the students. Not only are the students expected to produce the correct
output, but attention is also paid to correct pronunciation. Although correct grammar
is expected in usage, no explicit grammatical teaching is given. It is taught inductively.
In addition to that, the target language is the only language to be utilized in the
classroom. In the Audio _Lingual Method the teacher should demonstrate, not explain
or translate. It is desirable that students make a direct association between the target
language form and meaning. Students should also learn to think in the target
language as soon as possible.
In this method vocabulary is acquired more naturally if students use it in full
sentences, rather than memorizing word lists. The purpose of language learning is
communication so that implies that the students need to learn how to ask questions as
well as answer them. Lessons must have some conversational activity—some
opportunity for students to use language in real contexts. Students should be
encouraged to speak as much as possible Grammar should be taught inductively. There
may never be an explicit grammar rule given.
Teachers who use the Direct Method think students need to associate meaning with
the target language directly. In order to do this, when the teacher introduces a new
target language word or phrase, he demonstrates its meaning by utilizing realia,
pictures, or pantomime; he never translates it into the students’ native language.
REACTION PAPER ESSAY:
I liked reading on this method since I think there are some good things to learn from
it. In this method unlike the Grammar_ Translation Method students must make use
of the language by speaking it and I think it is great when one is able to communicate
and one´s target language and also be able to understand it but what I do not like on
this method is that one is not allowed to translate into one´s mother tongue provided
that one is supposed to figure out the meanings by seeing pictures, drawing, objects
etc. I personally like to learn languages by translating them into my mother tongue , I
believe I understand new vocabulary meanings more clearly when i translate into my
mother tongue, that is how it works for me. I do not think one is always able to figure
out the meanings of words by just seeing objects, pictures and drawings, oftentimes
more than that is required for one to have a clear understanding on the new
vocabulary one is trying to learn, sometimes explanation with words is required and if
you are not able to understand the target language really well then you will not be
able to understand when the teacher explains the new vocabulary to you so that is
basically why i like transalation but unfortunately the Direct- Method does not allow
you to translate into your mother tongue.
A good thing that I like on the Direct-Method is that it aims at developing an good
pronunciation and grammar and it helps you to devela the habilité to respond quickly
and accurately in speech situations and also grants yos knowledge of sufficient
vocabulary to use with grammar patterns. Particular emphasis was laid on mastering
the building blocks of language and learning the rules for combining them.
As the unit of speech in Direct Method is a sentence, students learn to speak complete
sentences without any hesitation. So they get confidence with command over good
English.
I bilieve is also great that the teacher uses various images or pictures to illustrates
his/her point. It makes the teaching English easier and more pleasant.
In this method there is direct relation between thought, it helps the learners in having
good fluency. Using direct method, a teacher helps students having good command
over English.
Some of the disadvantages that we can see on this method are that reading and
writing are ignored to a great extent, this is an expensive method as the teacher is to
use some aids for teaching, for this method, competent teachers must be there. But
there is the dearth of good English teachers in the country. Incompetent teachers can't
use this method successfully, he background at home must also be foreign language
friendly for this method. The students whose parents can speak English well get more
benefit from this method.
Finally, I think this a good method despite its shortcomings, But the teacher must be
able to modify it for the benefit of the students.
