LEARN

Brief discussion of the lesson:

 Tips/strategies to use when you encounter new words in a text.

 Look at the parts of the word. Are there any roots in the word? Does the word sound like
another word you know?
 Break down the sentence. What can you learn about the word based on the information
in the sentence?
 Hunt for clues. Are there definitions, synonyms, antonyms, that provide clues about the
word’s meaning?
 Think about connotative meaning (ideas, feelings, or associations beyond the dictionary
definition). Does the word have positive or negative connotations?
 Once you have a guess, substitute your word or phrase for the unfamiliar word to see if it
works.

 Understanding Context Clues

 Context clues are hints that the author gives to help define a word you
don’t know. The clue may appear in the same sentence as the word you
don’t know or in a nearby sentence.

 Context clues are useful and important strategy because it helps you
understand what you are reading, and it allows you to easily learn new
vocabulary.

Types of context clues

 Synonym- A synonym or word with the same meaning is used in the sentence.

Example: My opponent’s argument is fallacious,misleading-plain wrong.

 Antonym- A word or group of words that has opposite meaning reveals the meaning of an
unknown term.

Example: Although some men are loquacious, others hardly talk at all.

 Explanation- The unknown word is explained within the sentence or in a sentence

immediately preceding.

Example:The patient is so somnolent that she requires medication to help her stay awake for more
than a short time.

 Example- Specific examples are used to define the term.

For example: Celestial bodies, such as the sun, moon, and stars, are governed by predictable laws.

 Identifying the Use of Local Color in Literature

Local color is a literary device used by writers to show the locality or setting of a story. This
is shown in the writer’s use of native terms. Most literary selections reflect nature, life and culture
of particular localities.
 “The Story of Ruth” is one of the beautiful stories found in the Bible that is considered the
greatest literary work of man. The stories in the bible do not only show the life of Jesus and
the prophets it also shows the culture of Israel in early times.
ENGAGE

Let’s Practice!

Direction: Study the following paragraphs. Without using the dictionary, explain the
meaning of each underlined word using context clues.

Despite the (1) tremendous success of the space program, which is really very great,
much still remains to be done.It will be some time before man will have the (2)capability to
settle on planets-he has to use energy, such as rocket power in space vehicles.
One step in making such flights possible is the development of a (3) space station-a
kind of (4) orbiting platform, going around the earth. This will be used as a place for vehicles
where astronauts can get off before proceeding to the planets.
The next thing to be mastered is the (5) rendezvous-the meeting in space of two or
more vehicles, such as Gemini 6 and Gemini 7. When this (6)maneuver-a complicated tie-up
process-perfected, large space stations can be assembled after sending parts (7) aloft in space.
