Science 8 - Q1 - DW8

The document describes 3 activities where students explore how temperature affects the speed of sound by striking glasses of water at different temperatures and analyzing a graph showing the relationship between temperature and speed of sound. The activities aim to teach students that sound travels faster in materials at higher temperatures because the increased thermal energy causes molecules to vibrate and collide more frequently.

ACTIVITY 1: Hot and Cold, Fast or Slow

Learning Competency: Differentiate the medium used for sound to travel in terms
of the movement of particles as sound passes through (S8FE-le-24.1)

Objective: At the end of the activity you should be able to explain how temperature affects
the speed of sound.

Materials: glass with hot water, glass with warm water, glass with cold water,

metal spoon handle

Procedure:

1. Pour hot water (be careful) in a glass. Place the glass with hot water, glass with cold
water and glass with tap water side by side.
2. Check the water level on the 3 identical glasses. The water level must be the same.
3. Strike the 3 glasses one after the other using the handle of the metal spoon. Listen
to the sound produced. Repeat with at least 3 trials.
4. Fill up the table below: Describe the pitch using (low, high and higher) describe the
speed of sound using (slow, fast, faster)

Data and Results:

Temperature Pitch Speed of Sound

Hot
Warm
Cold
Guide Questions:
1. At what temperature does the sound travel fastest? _________________
2. At what temperature does the sound travel slowest? ________________
3. How does the vibration of the molecules compare for different temperatures?

ACTIVITY 2: Speed of Sound at Different Temperatures

Learning Competency: Compare the speed of sound in different media.

S8FE-le-24.2
Objectives: At the end of the activity you should be able to:

1. analyze a graph of speed of sound versus temperature; and

2. compare the speed of sound at different temperatures.

Procedure: Analyze the graph of speed of sound versus temperature below then

answer the given guide questions.

Guide Questions:
1. What does a straight line graph between the speed of sound and temperature
represent? __________________________________________________________
2. Give the approximate value of the speed of sound at the following temperatures
a. 40 0C _______ b. 20 0C ______ c. 10 0C _______

Closure: Explain how the temperature affects the speed of sound.

Activity 3: Smiley, Show me the Concepts!

Learning Competency: Compare the speed of sound in different media.

S8FE-le-24.2
Objectives: At the end of the activity you should be able to formulate concepts about the
effects of temperature to the speed of sound.

Procedure:

Think of the terms that are hidden by the smiley symbol to complete the
following concepts:

1. The of the material affects the speed of the sound.

2. Molecules move in warmer substances. As a substance

heats up, its molecules move faster, so they more
frequently.

3. Sound travels faster in temperatures. The more frequent the

collisions are, the the speed of sound is in the material.

4. For a given , sound waves travel more slowly at

temperatures.

Closure: How is the speed of sound affected during day time and night time?
