Activity:

Instruction: Read the text by Antonio Pigafetta. His chronicles on the Voyage Around the World
and write a reaction paper by answering the following questions: (20 pts)

1. What kind of document is it (letter, ad, newspaper, ect.)?

2. To whom was the written document addressed? How did you know?
3. What is the purpose of the document? What made you think so?
4. What do you think is the most important information that the author of the document was
conveying? Why?
5. What do you think are the possible biases committed by Pigafetta in writing this account?

The First Voyage Around the World. According to scholar Theodore Cachey Jr., the
travelogue represented “the literary epitome of its genre” and achieved an international
reputation. The document was written by Antonio Pigafetta, it is the journal of Ferdinand
Magellan’s voyage around the world. How did I know because Pigafetta wrote document for him
and for their journey along with others. He joined the expedition to the Spice Islands led by
explorer Ferdinand Magellan under the flag of the emperor Charles V and after Magellan's death
in the Philippine Islands, the subsequent voyage around the world. Magellan wanted to show that
the world is round and through exploring, he proves that the world is round. I think he wrote travelogue
because he wanted to show to Magellan how huge the world is . The Author wanted to document his
journey across the globe, he wanted to detail the events and experience. The most important that
the author conveying that Magellan discovered the Strait of Magellan while leading the first
expedition to successfully circumnavigate the globe. And because it shows how passionate he is
of what he is doing. And to prove that he can do anything to document this whole journey of
him. The document was biased to Fedinand Magellan because Antonio Pigafetta serves as the
right hand of Magellan during the voyage. If you truly read the entire journal of Pigafetta or even
just the excerpt of it, you could easily recognize his biases there. I'll give an example: (1)
Pigafetta, being an akin of Spaniards just focused on Magellan's activities (such as having
meetings with Datus)--But, Pigafetta didn't put the entire deliberation in his journal.  Pigafetta's
intention might only be to focused on the expidition and his colleagues' activities and not to put
on all the things happened in the past as they visited the Philippines.
