Lab Policy and Grading:
Student should understand the following policy:
ATTENDANCE: Attendance is mandatory and any absence must be for a valid excuse and
it must be properly documented. Students who turn up late will be penalized or
prevented from entering the lab.
ATTIRE: Wear appropriate clothing (lab coat is recommended) with proper shoes (cover all
toes and has rubber soles). Make sure students are wearing their matric card at all time.
ATTITUDE: Follow proper lab etiquette. Communication devices must be turned OFF.
Failure to do so may lead to student being suspended from lab session.
A. Preparation for the experiment:
Students are required to prepare thoroughly to perform the experiment before coming to the
laboratory session.
Before conducting the experiment, student is required to read through the experiment
manual and study the related theory.
Pre-lab assignment: MUST be submitted to the instructor at the beginning of lab sessions.
Verified by the instructor and returned to the students at the end of lab session. The verified
pre-lab must be attached with the final report for submission.
Demonstration: Students must demonstrate the experiment to the respective instructor.
Read and follow the procedures carefully.
The lab instructor may, during the experiment, ask students questions pertaining to the
procedure and theory. The lab instructor may give negative points or even prevent any
unprepared student from conducting the experiment. Tardy students may not be
allowed to perform the experiment.

B. Laboratory teams:
i. Face-to-face learning
If students are allowed to come to the university for face-to-face learning:
Not more than three students in a group. The composition of the teams (which students will
team up with) is left to the lab coordinator to decide.
When the experiment is completed, students should disconnect the setup made by them, and
should return all the components/instruments taken for the purpose, in proper order.
Students should be present in the laboratory for the total scheduled duration.
ii. Non-face-to-face learning
If students are still not allowed to enter the university on the basis of Movement Control
Order (MCO):
Learning is conducted online with no more than two students per group.
C. Laboratory report:
Copying of data, analysis, answers to questions or any part of another student’s report is
strictly forbidden and constitutes plagiarism. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken
to those found to copy other student’s work.
Each lab experiment requires a report. The reports are based on the report sheet. Report
must be submitted to the respective instructor UPON COMPLETION of lab session. Each
group submits one report per experiment (unless otherwise required). The grade of the
report is given to all members of the team.
Late reports are penalized by taking 2 points off per day.
The other grade components of the experiments are given to the students individually.
If a student misses or is dismissed from an experiment, the grade of that student shall
be zero (0) for that experiment.

OBJECTIVES
1. Describe the operations of digital multimeter, function generator, power supply and
oscilloscope.
2. Display proper operations of digital multimeter, function generator, power supply and
oscilloscope
3. Follows procedure in calibration of analog and digital oscilloscope.
PRE-LABORATORY (TO BE DONE BEFORE THE START OF LAB SESSION)
1. Figure 1 shows a typical solderless breadboard, with the center part magnified at the
bottom.
a) Label these parts on the breadboard figure, and state its function:
i) Power rails
ii) Terminal strips
iii) Centre divider/DIP support
iv) Binding posts
b) On the magnified Figure 1, draw lines corresponding to terminal (holes) that have
similar connection.

LAB ACTIVITY
PROCEDURE
A. Bench Digital Multimeter – Continuity test & resistance measurement
B. Bench Digital Multimeter – Voltage and current measurement of series DC circuit
NF2F: Use online circuit simulator (http://www.falstad.com/circuit/) for the steps below.
You can also use other circuit simulators such as,
A. http://circuitlab.com (limited keystrokes, if limit is reached, try using incognito
mode in your browser, or clear the browser’s cache.

Credit goes to the developers of the above websites. More instructions on how to use these
simulators are available at the respective websites, please read them and try to look at
examples.
INSTRUCTION
1. Construct the circuit below on the breadboard. Use the DC Power Supply as the DC
source.
A B
2. Under ‘Draw > Output and labels > Add voltmeter’, add a voltmeter to measure the
voltage across each resistor and the LED. Also measure the total voltage that is supplied
by the DC supply. Record your measurements.
3. Use the virtual Ammeter in series to the circuit to measure the current. Measure the
current at location A, B and C as in the figure above. Record your measurements.

1.0 DATA AND ANALYSIS
A. Bench Digital Multimeter – continuity test & resistance measurement
Using tables, record the measured resistance values here. Referring to the user manual of the
digital multimeter, write the resistance values, as well as its accuracy/tolerance/maximum
absolute error for each measurement. (Hint: Search for other resources on calculating this
absolute error value). Write any related comments.
NF2F: Measurement data is as below.
Measuring the 1 kΩ resistor: 1.0001 kΩ, 1.0001 kΩ, 1.0002 kΩ
Measuring the 270 Ω resistor: 270.01 Ω, 270.01 Ω, 269.99 Ω
Digital multimer accuracy specification for resistance measurement:
< 500 Ω range: ±(0.1% rdg + 4 digits)
> 500 Ω - 500kΩ range: ±(0.1% rdg + 2 digits)

2.0 QUESTIONS
1. What are the possible sources of error in all your measurements?
Human error. This could happen due to our carelessness
Transcriptional error. This happens when data is wrongly recorded or written down incorrectly.
2. Why accuracy or error information is important?
Accuracy or error information is important because accuracy represents how close a measurement
comes to its actual value. Error information is important because it will show us amount of
inaccuracy in our results.
