Learning Objective: After reading this MODULE, you should be

able to:
1. Identify the different types of online platforms.
2. Compare the difference of online platforms
.

1.1 WHAT IS IN FO RM AT IO N AN D CO M M UN ICAT ION T E CHN OL O GY

( ICT ) ?

ICT is a composite term, which embodies three important concepts. To

understand ICT, one must understand all three concepts.

IN FO RM AT ION

Information means many things to people. Depending on the context,

scientifically, information is a processes data. Information can also be loosely defined as
that which aids decision making. Information, through abstract, could also be visualized
as a commodity, which could be or solid. Any potentially useful fact, quantity or value
that can be expressed uniquely with exactness. Information is whatever is capable of
causing a human mid to change its opinion about the current state of the world.

CO M M U N ICAT ION

Communication refers to the transfer or exchange of information from person to

person or from one place to another. When action produce a reaction, whether positive
or negative, communication has taken place. Other writers in the field of
communication studies have defined communication as: process: a transfer of
information, ideas, thoughts and messages. It involves a sender, a receiver, a code and
a language that is understood by both the sender and receiver.

T E CHN O LO GY
Technology refers to the use of scientific knowledge to invent tools that assist
human beings in their efforts to overcome environmental hazards and impediments to
comfort. In this regard, technology refers to the things like computer, telephone, cell
phone, GSM handsets, television, radio and etc.

1 . 2 D IFFE REN T T Y PE S O F O NL IN E S Y ST E M AN D PL AT FO RMS

The acquisition, analysis, manipulation, storage and distribution of information;
and the design and provision of equipment and software.

Web 2.0

Is term that was introduced in 2004 and refers to

the second generation of the World Wide Web. The
term "2.0" comes from the software industry, where
new versions of software programs are labelled with
an incremental version number. Like software, the
new generation of the Web includes new features
and functionality that was not available in the past.
However, Web 2.0 does not refer to a specific
version of the Web, but rather a series of
technological improvements.

When it comes to defining web 2.0. the term means such internet applications
which allow sharing and collaboration opportunities to people and help them to express
themselves online.

It’s a simply improved version of the first worldwide web, characterized

specifically by the change from static to dynamic or user-generated content and also
the growth of social media.
The concept behind Web 2.0 refers to rich web applications, web-oriented
architecture, and social web. It refer to changes in the ways web pages are designed
and used by the users, without any change in any technical specifications.

Web 3.0
A phrase coined by John
Markoff of the New York Times in
2006, refers to a supposed third
generation of Internet-based services
that collectively comprise what might
be called ‘the intelligent Web’— such
as those using semantic web,
microformats, natural language
search, data-mining, machine
learning, recommendation agents,
and artificial intelligence
technologies—which emphasize machine- facilitated understanding of information in
order to provide a more productive and intuitive user experience”

Assistive Media
A component under Assistive
technology (AT), which is a generic term used to
refer to a group of software or hardware devices
by which people with disabilities can access
computers. Assistive Media is also a name of a
company: “the Internet's first audio solution for
persons with print reading/access barriers. The
audio recordings of the literary works produced
by Assistive Media are now easily accessible, on-
demand, to the ever growing number of persons with disabilities who now use the
Internet.”

Collaborative platforms
It is a category of business software
that adds broad social networking capabilities to
work processes. Collaborative software
or groupware is a new wave and is designed to
boost teams productivity as it allows to share
information, files and documents and helps them
communicate faster in an enterprise environment

Mobile Media
This refers to “media devices such as
mobile phones and PDA’s were the primary
source of portable media from which we could
obtain information and communicate with one
another. More recently, the Smartphone (which
has combined many features of the cell phone
with the PDA) has rendered the PDA next to
obsolete. The growth of new mobile media as a
true force in society was marked by Smartphone
sales outpacing personal computer sales in
2011.”

Mobile technology is indispensable in the modern workplace. Due to its versatility, it

offers a range of benefits, but also comes with considerable risks to the business. It is
essential to consider both advantages and disadvantages of using mobile technology in
business.

Examples of mobile IT devices

 laptop, tablets and netbook computers

 smartphones
 global positioning system (GPS) devices
 wireless debit/credit card payment terminals

Online systems
Are online versions of information
systems, which is “the process of and tools for
storing, managing, using, and gathering of data
and communications in an organization. An
example of information systems is tools for
sending out communications and storing files in
a business.”

Examples of online services

1. Bookings systems
Bookings for restaurants or reservations for a hotel can be managed online.
Beauticians, hairdressers and other service providers may allow their customers to
make appointments online. These systems can work with an online database and diary
and reduce scheduling issues. It can also help you keep your customers' details up to
date.

2. Training courses
Courses for training companies can be offered online. This can allow you to sell
your products to anyone in the world and they can take your courses at a time
convenient to them.

3. Order tracking
Courier companies can allow customers to track their orders online. This gives
customers an idea of how long they need to wait for a delivery, so they can make sure
they're home when a delivery is due.

4. Feedback forms
You can offer online feedback forms for your customers. This can help you
recognize problems and improve customer service without losing customers.

5. Membership management

their membership online. Customers may want to make changes to their membership
package, check schedules, change their details or check a record of their bookings
online.

Social Media
Are computer-mediated tools that
allow people or companies to create, share,
or exchange information, career interests,
ideas, and pictures/videos in virtual
communities and networks.

The 7 Different Types of Social Media

1. Social networking sites

Most of us are familiar with social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and
LinkedIn. These platforms help us connect with friends, family, and brands. They
encourage knowledge-sharing and are all about personal, human-to-human interaction.
A social networking site is a Jill of all trades. Users can share thoughts, curate
content, upload photos and videos, form groups based on interests, and participate in
lively discussions. They’re built around the user and everything that’s important to them
and their social circles.

Reach a target audience through ads:

These platforms cultivate large, diverse communities. Advertisers can rent
permission to interact with people based on specific targeting metrics. For instance, an
advertiser who wants to reach a predominantly young crowd could advertise on an app
like Snapchat while those who want to reach a professional user may find LinkedIn
more appropriate. Because these platforms are incredibly data rich, we can reach a lot
of the right people without blowing the entire ad budget.

Research: Social networking platforms are a great place for digging up customer
research and using social listening tools to track conversations around specific terms.
This can help us understand (and serve) our audience better.

2. Social review sites

What’s one of the first things you do when planning a trip or buying a new
product? If you’re anything like us, you’ll head straight to the reviews.
Review sites like Yelp and TripAdvisor display reviews from community members
for all sorts of locations and experiences. This eliminates a lot of the guesswork that
goes into booking a restaurant or hotel. Not sure it’s the right thing for you? Check out
the reviews and you’ll know.
Businesses can really benefit from studying their reviews, the good and the bad. It
helps them:

Understand the customer’s perspective: Reviews tell us about the customer
experience from their own point of view. Use this to identify what’s working and
discover areas with room for improvement.

Solve problems: Reviews are an opportunity to engage with reviewers and solve any
potential challenges before they become a huge deal.

3. Image sharing sites

Visual content like images, infographics, and illustrations capture our hearts,
eyes and imaginations. Social media platforms like Instagram, Imgur, and Snapchat are
designed to amplify the power of image sharing.
Users create, curate, and share unique images that spark conversation and
speak for themselves. A picture can be worth a thousand words to your business. Use
these sites to:

Encourage user-generated content: Image sharing sites are a gift for photogenic
businesses. You can run campaigns encouraging users to snap and share a pic with
your product and a unique hashtag.

Create inspiration: By creating, curating, and sharing your own images, you can
inspire and engage users, bonding over a shared interest.

4. Video hosting sites

YouTube revolutionized the way we watch, create, and think about video. It
transformed the medium into something accessible. Recent improvements in tech and
connectivity helped video go the rest of the way.
Video hosting platforms like YouTube and Vimeo help creators put together
content and share it to a platform optimized for streaming. This accessibility makes
video a super important medium.

Share phenomenal content: Yes. This point is a bit obvious, but creators can use
YouTube to build communities and get their content out there.

Engage: YouTube’s comment section offers plenty of opportunities to get to know the
people watching your content.

5. Community blogs

Sometimes an image or post isn’t complex enough for the message you’ve got to
share, but not everyone on the internet wants to run a blog from a self-hosted website.
That’s a lot of work.
Shared blogging platforms like Medium and Tumblr give people a space to
express their thoughts and help connect them with readers.

These community blog sites provide an audience while allowing plenty of room
for customization and self expression. Use them to:

Develop your voice: Starting a blog can be daunting. Use platforms like Medium and
Tumblr to find your voice, get some readers, and get clear about your vision.

Syndicate content: If you do have a blog, you can use community blogging platforms
to share, re-purpose, and re-post older content and expose it to a new audience.

6. Discussion sites

While most of us have seen many a heated discussion happen on Facebook,

discussion sites like Reddit and Quora are specifically designed to spark a conversation.
Anyone is free to ask a question or make a statement, and this attracts people with
shared interests and curiosities. However, unlike Facebook and Instagram, users tend
to give out less identifiable information.

Research: Reddit is made up of different sub-communities. With a bit of research, you

can find and engage people in your field, discover what they’re asking, and use this as
a starting point for your content marketing strategy.

7. Sharing economy networks

Sites like AirBnB and Rover aren’t just a cool place to find cheap holiday rentals
or a pet sitter. Sharing economy networks bring people who’ve got something they
want to share together with the people who need it. These communities provide
opportunities that won’t exist otherwise by pooling resources on a large scale that
wouldn’t be possible without tech.
