Let’s discover the world of information technologies by answering the succeeding
activities.

The term “Internet and Communication Technology” has been used by researchers
in the 1980s, but only became widely-used in the 90s after a report to the British
government by Dennis Stevenson. More than a decade after, it is now widely being
used, up to the point wherein governments have to create departments in order to
provide a better economic backbone.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) deals with the use of different
communication technologies such as mobile phones, telephone, internet, etc. to locate,
save, send, and edit information.

THE WORLD WIDE WEB (www)

The World Wide Web (www) is the system that enables computer users to access
hypertext documents and other files over the internet. The technology was proposed by
Tim Berners-Lee in 1989, in which a database and interface will be implemented to
associate links in readable documents.

Web 1.0 (Static Web)

In web 1.0 or the read-only web (static), documents are numbered with addresses that
should be inputted to retrieve the file. There were no facilities to interact with it other
than to read or view the content. Web 1.0 is simply an information portal where users
passively receive information without being given the opportunity to post reviews,
comments, and feedback.

Web 2.0 (Dynamic Web)

The term web 2.0 was first used in a 1999 article written by Darcy DiNucci, called
“fragmented future”. Web 2.0 is the evolution of web 1.0 by adding dynamic web pages
– the user is able to see a website differently than others. In web 2.0 users are allow to
use web browsers instead of just using their operating system. Browser can now be
used for their user interface, application software and even for file storage.

Web 2.0 facilitates interaction between web users and sites, so it allows users to
interact more freely with each other. Web 2.0 encourages participation, collaboration,
and information sharing.

Web 3.0 (Semantic Web)

Web 3.0 is a semantic web which refers to the future. In Web 3.0, computers can
interpret information like humans and intelligently generate and distribute useful content
tailored to the needs of users. One example of Web 3.0 is “Tivo”, a digital video
recorder. Its recording program can search the web and read what it finds to you based
on your preferences.

Social Media

Social media is a website, application or online channel that enables web users to
create, co-create, discuss, modify, and exchange user-generated content. According to
Nielsen, a global information and measurement company, Internet users spend more
time in social media sites than in any other type of site. With this, more and more
advertisers use social media to promote their product.

Types of Social Media

A. Social Networks
These are websites that allow you to connect with other people with the same
interests or background (e.g. Facebook)

B. Bookmarking Sites
These are websites that allow you to store and manage links to various websites
and resources. (e.g. Pinterest)

C. Social News
These are websites that allow users to post their own news items or links to other
resources. The users can also comments on the post and comments may also
be ranked. (e.g. reddit)

D. Media Sharing
These are websites that allow you to upload and share media content like image,
music, and video. (e.g. YouTube)

These are websites that focus on short updates from the user. (e.g. Twitter)
