Environmental Project

I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

There is a new bill authored by Magdalo representative Gary Alejano being passed
which signifies that every learner before graduating should be able to plant 10 trees at his
chosen locations so as to solve the deforestation problem. With this bill at hand, it helps
promote environmental awareness among every learner in the Philippines. The learner
can have his choice of location on where to plant the ten trees and it can start from one’s
backyard to the barangay and even to the school. With the Gulayan sa Paralan program
under the Department of Education still ongoing, the learners’ participation has been put
on hold because of the pandemic crisis. Yet there are still alternatives seen so as to
encourage learners to be more active in the environmental awareness campaign by being
participatory and fully involved in an environmental project being implemented
continuously.

One environmental project which can encourage the learners to be involved

actively is the Barangay Gulayan Project. The LGU-IRIGA had been implementing this
project for more than five years now for the reason of sustainable development and as a
livelihood project at the same time. Under the helm of the Barangay Captain and the
Sanguniang Kabataan chairman.

A learner can be active on this project because he is a resident of the barangay

and that he is also a member of the Sangguniang Kabataan. He can help in the
maintenance of the barangay garden by offering his time and skills to make it even more

successful. An additional advantage is he will learn to appreciate the bounties of nature
more with his participation.

Another environment project wherein a learner can be fully involved with is a

backyard garden. Having a backyard garden is within his comfort zone thus encouraging
him to be more participative. It is also his way of helping put food on the table and boosting
his self-esteem at the same time.

The benefits of having a backyard garden are as follows:

a) It addresses issues and concerns on hunger and malnourishment
b) It is an income generator for a family and considered to be a livelihood as well.
c) The food planted and harvested are free of chemical components which generate
additional nutrients to the body
d) Planting, Sowing and Harvesting activities are simple but effective exercises that
can help release endorphins which can make people happy and healthy at the same time.
e) It is environmentally friendly since the plants emit oxygen needed by people and
takes in carbon dioxide which is one of the causes of air pollution.

VI. REFLECTION:

The pandemic cannot be a barrier for development in a person’s physiological and

mental aspects. It should inspire and encourage an individual to learn to count his
blessings and show compassion towards others. Take the community project not as a
compliance but rather a dedication to be humane in all aspects.
