Selected Midterm 1 Problems

The document contains 6 questions related to mechanical engineering concepts like material properties, stress analysis, probability of failure, shaft design, beam deflection, and impact loading. The questions provide specific numerical values and ask the reader to calculate answers related to minimum thickness, probability of failure, shaft diameter, deflection, and safety factors. Sample answers are provided for some of the questions.

Selected Midterm I Questions

1. The figure shows a forklift truck passing over two 15-deg ramps (one for each side) to drive onto a 120 cm-high
loading platform. The truck weighs 22 kN. The distance between the wheels (b-a) is 105 cm. The cross-sections of the
ramps have a channel shape as shown. Assume that the forklift travels over the ramps slowly such that the loading on
the ramps may be taken as static. Design the ramps to have a safety factor of 3.0 against yielding for the worst case.
Try to minimize their weights. Choose an appropriate steel or aluminum alloy. The distance between the center of
mass and the front wheel (CGa) is 75 cm and the distance between the center of mass and the rear wheel (CGb) is 30
cm. The width of the ramp (w) is 30 cm.

Answer: If the chosen material is 1040 cold rolled steel with Sy = 490 MPa and t is chosen to be 2 cm, h = 10.8 cm.

2. The truss bar structure shown in the figure is subject to a downward applied force, P, at
joint B. The diameter of the bars BD and BC is 4 cm. The yield strength of their material
is 200 MPa with a standard deviation of 25 MPa. The structure should be considered to
have failed if one of the truss bars yields. Calculate the probability of failure of the
structure if

a) The load, P, is 240 kN with no uncertainty in its magnitude.

b) The load, P, is 240 kN with a standard deviation of 30 kN.
c) The load, P, is 240 kN with a probability of 0.3 and P is 200 kN with a probability of
0.7

Answers: a) 0.0297, b) 0.0695, c) 0.0102

3. 1.5-m-long circular shaft has a flywheel at one end and rotates at 240 rpm. The shaft is suddenly stopped at the other
end. What should be the diameter of the shaft to have a safety factor of 2.0 against failure? Also determine the
maximum angle of twist. It is given that the shaft is made of steel with Sy = 500 MPa, G = 80.5 GPa, the mass of the
flywheel is m = 100 kg, and the flywheel’s radius of gyration is rg = 0.35 m. (Note that I  mrg 2 , where I is the mass
moment of inertia of the flywheel).

Answers: 22.5 cm, 1.37

4. Consider a bended bar with a diameter of 25 mm. The forces S and P are
statically applied with magnitudes 5000 N and 1000 N, respectively. Find
the deflection at the point of application of the force P, in the x and y
directions. (E = 200 GPa,  = 0.3).

Answers: x = 23.1 mm, x = 8.79 mm

5. Consider the bended bar in the previous problem. If the yield strength of the
material is 800 MPa, what would be the safety factor against failure?.

Answer: 0.93

6. Consider the bended bar in the first problem. The load P is again applied
statically with the same magnitude (1000 N). However instead of the
statically applied force S, if one strikes to the tip in the x direction with a
hammer having a mass of 3 kg at a speed of 2 m/s, what would be the safety
factor against failure? The effective stress concentration factor for impact
loading is 2..
