GE 5 Lesson 1

Communication is important for society as it facilitates the exchange of information, ideas and knowledge, and allows people to build social identities and understand their sense of purpose. Good communication skills are essential for being a good citizen as they help establish positive relationships, ensure well-being, discover personal integrity and responsibility, and prevent misunderstandings. There should be ethics in communication to promote accuracy, truthfulness, fairness, accountability, personal integrity and respect for all. When people are unethical in their communication, they lose trust and respect, harm relationships, and negatively impact society.

LET’S GET STARTED!

I. Answer the following:

1. Why is communication important to you and the society?

Communication has become deeply ingrained in our way of life. And so,
communication is important not just to me, but also to our society, because it not
only facilitates the process of exchanging information, ideas, and knowledge, but
it also allows us to build social identities. It also helps us to comprehend our
sense of purpose and develop a more humane society.

2. Why do you think communication skills are considered to be essential in being a

good citizen?

Communication skills are regarded essential in being a good citizen

because they help us to establish positive relationships with others and ensure
the quality of wellbeing. Communication skills lead to the discovery of personal
integrity, as well as a feeling of responsibility, respect, and compassion for
others. Misunderstandings, difficulties, and violations will result from a lack of
communication skills. As a result, in order to be a good citizen, we must be good
at communicating.

3. Why do you think should there be ethics in communication?

Ethics in communication are essential because they facilitate

communication accuracy and promote truthfulness, fairness, accountability,
personal integrity, and respect for self and others. The development of
trustworthy and compassionate relationships with others, which comes through
ethical communication, also contributes to a fulfilling existence. If communication
is not conducted ethically, problems may develop, affecting the quality of our
society.

4. What problems can arise when people are not ethical in their communication
practices?

When people communicate in an unethical manner, they quickly lose trust,

respect, compassion toward humanity, and a feeling of responsibility. Moreover,
unethical communication jeopardizes the quality of all communication and has a
negative impact on both people and society. Therefore, practicing ethical
communication principles are essential for us as it will enrich our wellbeing.
LET’S DO THIS!
I. Answer the following:
1. Think of any communication situation you’ve had in the past and explain it using
one of the communication models discussed.
I was offered the opportunity to run for student council representative
during my first year of senior high school. I also gave a speech on my candidacy for
grade 11 presentative in order to urge my classmates to vote for me. In this case, I
was the speaker, and my speech was made for the occasion. The occasion is the
election of grade 11 representatives, with the students as the audience. And the
effect was that students voted for me as the grade 11 student council
representative.
2. Watch this video (https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=691366991792278) of Cebu
Mayor Gwen Garcia and explain the credo/s violated. Explain.
Mayor Gwen Garcia had violated the principles of ethical communication,
which is that she did not take responsibility for her wrong statement. Instead, she
strongly defended herself that she didn't say that steam inhalation was the cure for
covid19 when, in fact, in her previous speech, she clearly said that the cure for
covid19 was steam inhalation. Plus, the fact that her statements were inaccurate
only proves that she violated the first credo of ethical communication, which is to
advocate truthfulness, accuracy, honesty, and reason as essential to the integrity of
communication.
