CACE Lab-1 VIVA QS

The document outlines various questions related to concepts in GIS and its applications in civil engineering, including topics like digitizing maps, creating thematic maps, using tools in ArcGIS to estimate features and analyze attribute data, developing digital elevation models, importing and formatting geospatial data, and specific tools for geo-referencing, merging layers, and creating buffer areas. It provides definitions and explanations of important GIS terms and how different functions in ArcGIS software can be utilized for visualization, analysis, and problem-solving in civil engineering projects.

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

III/IV - B.Tech – II Semester

Computer Applications in Civil Engineering Lab-1
VIVA QUESTIONS

1. Digitization of Map/Toposheet
i. What is a Map?
ii. What is Toposheet?.
iii. What is meant by Digitization of maps?
iv. Define GIS?
v. What is co-ordinate system in GIS?
vi. Differentiate geometric and projected co-ordinate systems?
vii. What is Spatial data?
viii. What is Attribute data?
ix. Name few attributes of a map?
x. What is meant by vectorization of maps?
xi. What is DBMS(Data Base Management System)?
A Database Management System (DBMS) is software designed to
store, retrieve, define, and manage data in a database
xii. Define a shapefile?

2. Creation of Thematic maps

i. What is a Thematic map?
ii. What is the purpose of plotting a thematic map?
The primary purpose of a thematic map is to visually portray a non-
visual phenomenon, usually the attributes of geographic features
(e.g., the median income of a county). A good thematic map clearly
shows geographic patterns that mirror patterns in the real-world
phenomenon.
iii. What is Legend over a thematic map?
iv. What is the purpose of displaying scale bar on a thematic map?
v. What is the tool to display direction of a map?
vi. Name a few tools that are used in Arc GIS to create thematic map?
vii. Differentiate data view and layout view of a map?
Data view provides a geographic window for exploring, displaying, and
querying the data on your map. ... In layout view, you work with the map
layout elements, such as titles, north arrows, and scale bars, along with
the data frame, all of which are arranged on a page.

3. Estimation of features and Interpretation

i. What is the use of ‘cut polygon’ tool in Arc GIS?
ii. What is the use of ‘split’ tool in Arc GIS?
Splits an input with overlaying features to create a subset of
output feature classes.
iii. What is the use of ‘edit vertices’ tool in Arc GIS?
iv. What is the use of ‘reshape’ tool in Arc GIS?
The Reshape Feature task lets you reshape a line or polygon by constructing a
sketch over a selected feature.
v. What is meant by a field in Arc GIS? In ArcGIS, rows are known as
records and columns are referred to as fields. Each field in a table can
store a specific type of data, such as a number, date, or piece of text.
So fields form the attribute information for any given layer in the
map or stand-alone table.
vi. What is Attribute table? What is its use?
The attribute table displays information on features of a selected
layer. Each row in the table represents a feature (with or without
geometry), and each column contains a particular piece of information
about the feature
vii. Name few operations that can be carried out in attribute table? Tabular
information is the basis of geographic features, allowing you to visualize, query,
and analyze your data.

viii. What is meant by ‘summarizing a field’ in Arc GIS? The Summarize

Attributes tool summarizes like field values to generate a
summary table. The resulting layer displays the count of features
that have been summarized, as well as any additional statistics
that have been specified.
ix. Differentiate Raster and Vector images?  Raster images are best for
photos, while vectors are best for logos, illustrations, engravings,
etchings, product artwork, signage, and embroidery.
Raster (or bitmap) images are described by an array or map of bits
within a rectangular grid of pixels or dots. Vector images are
described by lines, shapes, and other graphic image components
stored in a format that incorporates geometric formulas for rendering
the image elements
4. Developing Digital Elevation Model
i. Define Digital Elevation Model(DEM)?
ii. What is the use of creating a DEM?
iii. What surveying parameters are required to create a DEM in GIS software?
iv. What are different types of DEM?
v. What is meant by hill shade function?
vi. What is meant by pan sharpening function?
vii. What is the use of ‘Image Analysis’ tool in Arc GIS?
5. Simple Applications of GIS in Civil Engineering
i. What is a base map?
ii. What type of files can be imported to a GIS software?
iii. Name a few image formats?
iv. What is the full form of PNG and JPG?
v. What is the use of TIFF format in GIS?
vi. What is importance of DBMS in GIS?
vii. What is the use of ‘Join’ tool in Arc GIS?
viii. What is the use of ‘Relate’ tool in Arc GIS?
ix. Name a few applications of GIS in Civil Engineering?
6. Geo-referencing
i. What is geo-referencing?
ii. What is use of geo-referencing?
7. Merging two different layers in GIS
i. What is the use of merge tool in GIS ?
8. Creating a buffer area around a selected point
i. What is the use of buffer tool in GIS?
