Plate No. 5 Design of Square Footing: Effective Soil Pressure

This document summarizes the design of a square column footing to support a 500mm square column carrying a total load of 1100kN. The footing is 1.5m below grade where the allowable soil pressure is 219kPa. The design calculates the footing size as 2.4m square and determines 16 reinforcement bars are needed in both directions based on moment capacity. The reinforcement satisfies the development length requirements.

5 Design of Square Footing

Design a square column footing to support a 500 mm square tied column that carries a
dead load of 600 kN and live load of 500 kN. The base of the footing is 1.5 m below the natural
grade where the allowable soil pressure is 219 kPa. The soil above the footing weighs
15.6kN/m3. Assume fy = 275 MPa, fc’=27.5 MPa, concrete weighs 23.5 kN/m3

Solution: Using NSCP 2015

𝐴𝑠𝑠𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑘 = 0. 25
𝐶𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑛 𝐿𝑜𝑎𝑑 = 600 + 500 = 1100 𝑘𝑁
𝐶𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑛 𝐿𝑜𝑎𝑑 1100

= 0. 25 219
= 0. 56 𝑚 = 560 𝑚𝑚

ℎ𝑠 = 1. 5 − 0. 56 = 0. 94 𝑚
