Objectives:
1. Define Absolute Value.
2. Find the absolute value of a number.
3. Represent the absolute value of a number on a number line as the
distance of a number from 0.
Directions: Study the picture carefully, then answer the questions that follow.
Chen and Klay both came from their friend’s house. From there, Chen walked in the right
direction, while Klay walked in the left direction.

1. Starting at 0, how many steps did Chen take to where she stands? Also, how many
steps did Klay take to where he is now in the picture?
____________________________________________________________
2. What can you say about the direction that Chen and Klay are heading?
a. the same b. opposite c. parallel d. intersecting
3. Who walked the farther distance from their friend’s house - Chen or Klay?

Did you enjoy doing the first activity? See if your answers are correct.
2
1. Chen has 9 steps starting at 0, as does Klay, 9 steps.
2. Chen and Klay walked in opposite directions.
3. Chen and Klay had the same number of steps, therefore, they walked with
the same distance.
The absolute value of a number x, denoted by │x│, read as “the absolute value of x”, is the
distance between the number x from 0 on the number line. Since we are referring to distance, the
absolute value of a number can never be negative. However, if a negative sign is outside, it is not
affected by the absolute value symbol.
The symbol for absolute value is two straight lines surrounding the number or expression
for which you wish to indicate absolute value, │ │.
The number line is not just a way to show distance from zero, it is also a good way to graph
absolute value.
|x| = 2. To show x on the number line, you need to show every number whose absolute
value is 2.
Other Examples:
Now, let us find the absolute value of a number observing the indicated
operations.
1) |8 + 12| = |20| = 20 2) |16 – 9| = |7| = 7 3)−|14 – 6| = −|8 | = −8
