3. Introduction
In general there are two different types of bearings:
The Plummer Block with an upper and lower shell, which is able to take radial forces in all
directions
The Tunnel Bearing with only a lower shell, which is taking up radial forces directed laterally
and downwards.
The parts of the bearing are shown in the assembly drawing and the parts list.
4. Installation
WARNING! Danger of injury or mortal danger!
All to be moved parts are heavy and may cause health impairment, injuries, permanent
bodily damage or to death in case of accident.
The bearing and the bearing point of the shaft journal must be checked before installation to
make sure that they have suffered no transport damage and are perfectly clean.
ATTENTION! Danger to material assets!
Protective measures must be done to ensure the cleanness of the bearing during the whole
assembly.
The mounting dimensions and especially the tolerances as shown in the assembly drawing
have to be checked before the installation is started.
First the upper (2) and lower (1) bearing housing parts are to be dismounted as explained in
chapter 5. Dismounting.
Then the lower part of the bearing (1) has to be positioned on the foundation.
ATTENTION! Danger to material assets!
Before positioning the lower bearing the bearing shell (8) and the bearing journal of the
shaft must be coated with oil.
Whilst the shaft is coupled and aligned the shaft has to rest on a temporary support. When
the shaft is finally aligned, the lower bearing housing is to be moved, by the use of the the

two adjusting screws (40) in the bearing centre, until the lower bearing shell just gets in
contact to the shaft without taking over the radial load. Check the contact with a feeler gauge.
The arrangement of the adjusting screws in the centre of the lower bearing shell makes sure
that the shell (8) contacts the shaft equally.
NOTE!
For the installation of intermediate shaft bearings with a center support please check
chapter 9. Bearings with central support.
When the bearing is in on the required height, the lateral bearing clearance has to be aligned
so that it is equal on both sides.
ATTENTION! Danger to material assets!
Make sure that the gap between the bearing shell (8) and the shaft is equal on the AFT and
the FWD end on starboard and on port side to avoid edge load in the bearing.
In cases where the intermediate shaft bearing is equipped on special customers request with
spherical bearing shells the lower bearing housing (1) has additionally to be aligned.
After the lower bearing part is aligned, the upper bearing part has to be assembled and the
temporary shaft support has to be removed. The bearing carries now the radial load.
The bearing reaction load, as given in the shaft deflection bending line, must be checked by
balancing and, if necessary, the bearing alignment has to be changed.

Then the dimensions for the bearing adjusting piece have to be taken and the adjusting
pieces have to be machined accordingly. They can be inserted after the bearing load is be
taken up by the temporary support.
When the temporary support is removed the shaft has to be turned 10 times.
Then the lower part (1) has to be firmly bolted to the foundation.
The reaction load of the bearing must be checked by balancing and, if necessary, the height
of the liners has to be corrected in accordance with the weight factors of the shaft deflection
bending line.
Now the oil ring (15) and the sealing rings (60) together with the draw spring (61) are to be
installed as shown in the assembly drawing.
The conical end of the draw spring is to be screwed into the cylindrical end.
ATTENTION! Danger to material assets!
The draw spring (61) is to be preloaded by turning it one to two times against the screw in
direction.
The draw springs (61) are delivered ready for installation. The sealing rings (60) have to be
cut according to the shaft diameter to suitable length according to paragraph 10. Cutting the
sealing ring.
ATTENTION! Danger to material assets!
The gap between the ends of the sealing ring (60) must be less than 1 mm after the draw
spring (61) is installed. Do not glue the sealing ring.
The oil lubricating ring nuts and bolts (16, 17) must be tightened with 15 Nm.
During the assembly of the oil lubricating ring (15) the clearance between the oil ring (15) and
the bearing shell (8) as shown in the assembly drawing and its true running to the shaft
(< 0,05 to 0,1 mm) has to be checked.
If necessary they have to be corrected.
Before fitting the upper bearing part (2) to the lower bearing part (1), the cover (25) and the
oil scraper screw (21) have to be removed. All parts must be rechecked for cleanness.
Before the the upper bearing part (2) can be mounted, the parting line between the casing
parts must be coated with the sealing compound (73) according to the suppliers instructions.
Then the upper bearing part (2) is put on the lower bearing part (1), aligned with the parallel
pins (5, 6, 7) and the screws (3, 4) are to be tightened with the bolting torque as shown in the
assembly drawing. As next the oil scraper (20) is inserted through the inspection opening in
the upper bearing housing and placed on the oil ring (15). Than the end of the oil scraper
screw (21) has to be inserted into the groove in the oil scraper (20) and tightened. The bolt
must be secured against turning by using LOCTITE.
Next the mating face of the cover (25) at the bearing upper part (2) must be coated with the
sealing compound (73). The cover (25) has to be fixed to the upper bearing part housing (2)
with the screws (26).
After a final inspection, the bearing can be filled with oil through the oil inlet to the upper mark
on the dip stick (50). The inlet has to be closed with the plug (65).
Any brand of mineral or gear box oil with low foaming and good ageing resistance properties
may be used. The use of hydraulic oil is to be avoided.

The oil viscosity to be used is shown on page 5.
5. Dismounting
First the the cover (25, 26, 27) and the oil scraper screw (21) have to be dismounted and the
oil scraper has to be taken out.
After the joint bolts (3, 4) and the parallel pins (5, 6, 7) have been removed, the upper
bearing housing (2) can be lifted.
Because both parts are bolted together with the screws (10, 11, 12), on a Plummer Block, the
upper bearing shell (9) and the upper casing of the bearing (2) are lifted off in one piece.
On a tunnel bearing, the lower bearing shell (8) is connected to the lower bearing part (1)
with the screws (10, 11, 12).
The split oil ring (15) can be taken out after the fastening elements (16, 17, 18, 19) have
been removed.
For taking out the sealing rings (63) the draw springs (62) have to be unscrewed.
Before dismantling the lower bearing shell, the shaft should be slightly raised, allowing the
shell to be rotated around the shaft and be lifted off.
ATTENTION! Danger to material assets!
The intermediate shaft bearings do have a temperature sensor (35) and some do also have a
local thermometer fitted to the lower bearing shell (8). The sensor and the possible local
thermometer must be removed before the lower bearing shell(8) can be dismounted.
6. Commissioning
During the test run, the bearing temperature (see page 5 Mean operating temperature) and
the oil level are to be monitored.
If required, oil must be topped up during operation to keep the level at the upper mark.
Immediately after the test run, the bearing load must be checked by weighing.
Weighing factors for a height correction of the bearing can be taken from the calculation of
the shaft deflection curve.
Temperature sensors on the bearing shell do show an operating temperature approximately
10 degrees above a thermometer measuring in the oil sump.
7.Maintenance
The first oil change must be carried out not later than 2000 operating hours.
Further oil changes should be made every 4000 to 5000 operating hours.
Apart from this, oil has to be refilled as required.
8. Running faults
An increase of the bearing operating temperature generally indicates running faults. For
avoiding bearing damages in this case the shaft speed should be immediately reduced and
the shaft line cooled in the bearing area with air. Do not stop the shaft.

9. Bearings with central support
Once the height of the lower bearing part has been adjusted as described in Chapter 4 Installation,
the centre adjusting piece must be fitted first.
Next, the load acting on the adjusting screws (40) has to be reduced, and after an additional
checking of the lateral gap the foundation work should be continued as described in chapter

11.Temperature sensor PT100 / PT1000
Resistance thermometers PT100 / PT1000 delivered by Svenska Bearing are for ship operation only.
They are measuring the bearing operating temperature at the lower bearing shell close to the
bearings white metal.
The measuring principle of the resistance thermometer is based on the temperature dependent
resistance change of metal filaments.
The resistance thermometers have a very high accuracy within a temperature range of -50 °C to
+200°C for PT100 and -30°C to +200°C for PT1000.
For PT 100 the measuring result is influenced by the connecting wire resistance and / or by the type
of circuit. The application of the three-wire circuit allows measurements over longer distances and
leads to a reduction of temperature influence in the input wire. The actual error is generally small and
can be neglected.
For PT1000 this influence is neglect able and it has only a two-wire connection.
During the bearing alignment it might be helpful to dismount the temperature sensor for getting easier
access to the adjusting screws. For dismounting the temperature sensor loosen the union nut of
position (36) and pull out the sensor. After the alignment the sensor has to be installed and the union
nut has to be tightened.
