Gender and Development
Task 1:
1. Discuss awareness campaign, activities, and implementation of programs/projects of
Gender and Development in your:
1.1. Community
In Bicol Region, there were numerous activities and projects of Gender and
Development (GAD). In Albay province, specifically, they conducted Committee
Hearing on the Approval of Provincial Gender and Development (GAD) Plan and
Budget for CY 2021 with BM Baby Glenda O. Bongao, Committee Chair on Women,
Family, Children and GAD, Ms. Cynthia R. Samalea, GFPS-TWG Chair, and Dr.
Rowena L. Ondiz, GFPS-TWG Co-Chair for the future Gender and Development
projects and activities for 2021. Moreover, in the said province, they conducted
seminar for Magna Carta for Women and Gender-fair Language. There were also
GAD activities and advocacy programs such as Gender Sensitivity for Men (MOVE)
and Orientation on Gender Based Violence Laws (MOVE); some were conducted
through live streaming on Facebook: All aVAWt VAW: 2020 18-day Campaign Day
to End VAW Virtual Kick-Off, VAWal 'Yan!: Know your rights under the Anti-VAWC
Act, Brgy. Malalapitan at Maaasahan: Capacitating Barangay VAW Desks, Bawal
Bastos Dito!: Anti-Sexual Harassment Law and Safe Spaces Act, and Human, Hindi
Labuan: Laws against trafficking in persons, those were conducted to promote and
facilitate VAW-free Barangays. Furthermore, in the province of Sorsogon City they
enhance the VAW desk through the social media and including phone numbers
email address for the contact details.
1.2. School
At the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), there were also
numbers of Gender and Development-related activities, projects, and awareness
campaigns in which some were implemented by the University, faculty-lead
organizations, and student-lead organizations. To name some, the university had
conducted orientation about Gender and Development for the first-year students
which was notified through the SIS website. PUP signed a Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) with the Correlational institution for Women. Furthermore, the
Bachelor of Arts in Communication Research students organized different
communication campaigns to impart to the attainment of the United Nations
Development Programme’s (UNDP) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which
certainly include Gender and Development-related campaigns, such as advocacy
about Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and Sex Characteristics
(SOGIESC) Education. There were also other organizations that develop and
implement activities and awareness campaigns namely: PUP Psychology Students
Association, PUP College of Communication Student Council, PUP College of Social
Science and Development Student Council, and other bodies of student
organizations and student councils, in which their activities and projects were
implemented in celebration of International Women’s Month. Also, due to the deeper
understanding about gender, it includes the LGBTQIA+ community. In connection to
this, numbers of organizations conducted webinars and awareness campaigns to
celebrate the Pride Month this month of June. These organizations highly promote
Anti-Discrimination Bill or the SOGIE Bill which covers all genders and sexes for the
protection as stated in the bill, through their webinars and awareness and advocacy
campaigns.
1.3. At home
Within our home, everyone is obliged to do household chores regardless of
genders, however only appropriate to their ages. I, as the eldest, may wash clothes,
the dishes, clean the bathroom, the balcony, and every corner of the house.
Likewise, the person next to me at birth order will do the same. Additionally, our
parents work for financial support and expenses. Even repairing objects in the
house, everyone can learn as well as do the job. The division of responsibilities at
our home is not gender-biased, rather it follows gender equality.
3. In the present era where GAD has been given spotlight, what do you think is still
lacking in the implementation or mainstreaming of GAD.
One of the main concerns of Gender and Development (GAD) is the gender equality.
Gender has wide spectrum and that includes LGBTQIA+. LGBTQIA+ people belong to
our community and shall be considered in the implementation or mainstreaming of GAD.
However, there are implementations, especially in the political concerns such as laws,
that do not include the said group of people, which is also they are considered part of
the marginalized sector together with women. There are still people from the group who
experience discrimination and hate towards them which affects their workplace,
environment, psychological, emotional, and physical well-being. There should be laws or
orders that promote gender-free and violence-free for these people. It is still lacking due
to the fact that Anti-Discrimination Bill has not yet being passed in the Senate Hearing.
Anti-Discrimination Bill, if passed as law, is essential as it aim to protect all people which
also concerns their sexual orientation, gender identity and expression (SOGIE)—this
applies to both heterosexual and homosexual people.

“The Lady Justice shall serve without knowing someone’s gender and shall not
be biased by someone’s gender. May the color of men and women be one as she
serves justice.”
