Advantages and Disadvantages of Computers

This document discusses the advantages and disadvantages of computer use. It notes that computers can multitask and perform calculations much faster than humans. Computers also allow for safe storage of data through backups. However, excessive computer use can make people lazy and reduce employment. While computers protect data through backups, data can still be lost through virus attacks.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Computers

A computer is simply a programmable device that can accept raw data as its input and

then processes that using a set of instructions and produce output that comprises the result. It

can deal with both numerical and non-numerical calculations. In today's world, people have

embraced the use of computers in various sectors (Vaportzis et al., 2017). For instance, in the

education sector, teachers and students have utilized computers for learning. In this essay, we

will look at both the advantages and disadvantages of computers.

The use of computers has grown so much because of the many advantages or benefits

it promises the users. For instance, a computer can multitask, which is unlike a human being.

An individual can carry out a few tasks or operations or even calculations simultaneously,

while the computer can do millions of operations in a short time (Dumford & Miller, 2018).

This ensures that a lot of work is done faster and a company, organization or business

accomplishes goals easier. The factor of time and how limited and crucial it can be for

organizations, the speed of accomplishing all those tasks by a computer is also an advantage.

Another advantage of the use of computers is the safe storage of important data. Data

is one of the most important resources in a company. Keeping data safe and secure is

something every organization considers a priority (Vaportzis et al., 2017). Keeping important

data in the form of paper documents puts the data in danger of damage, stealing, or easy

fabrication, resulting in losses. Computers help by enabling data storage in soft copy, which

can always be downloaded if needed. The cloud storage features to ensure that not anyone

can access the data and alter or destroy it in any form.

However, despite the advantages, there are also disadvantages (Vaportzis et al., 2017).

For instance, computers have resulted in many individuals becoming lazy in the work or

operations they would have done without computers. For example, some calculations are too

easy to be calculated using computers. Still, some students are already used to computers to

the extent they do not wish to exercise their mental capabilities on such tasks. Various studies

have revealed that one of the reasons today's youth are somewhat lazy compared to decades

ago is the excessive use of computers.

Another disadvantage is that despite the backup advantage of storing data, there is a

chance that the data could be spoilt if there is a virus attack (Srivastava, 2019). A computer

virus has various ways it can affect a computer. The main effect on data is destroying the data

once it gets access to a host computer. This can result in loss of data which can cause

damages on a company.

Computers have also reduced the employment opportunities of many. A few

individuals did the work done by a computer in the past before integrating computers in

various sectors (Dumford & Miller, 2018). Allowing only a few who have the skills to

operate the computers has made many lose their jobs despite most of them having a

significant amount of experience in the various fields.

In this paper, we have seen that a computer can help accomplish various things more

efficiently than a human being. These are the advantages it has. However, we have also seen

that its use has its cons, and it is up to humans who use it to decide how to reduce the impact

it can have on their lives.
