GE1-Understanding the Self with Personality Development
Learning Activity #2: Essay

The term "self-concept" relates to how we understand ourselves and, to some extent, how we
think. As a result, self-concept may be understood as a component that impacts both what and how we
think about ourselves. A self-idea allows us to be self-aware and assess ourselves properly. I was able to
boost my self-esteem by using the process of progressive comparison. I've learnt when and how to
approve and respect myself by comparing my accomplishments, thoughts, and beliefs to those of others.
I've also realized, as a result of the social comparison process, that my high self-esteem didn't just happen;
rather, it was the outcome of the process.
My social perception has resulted in the emergence of societal comparison. Back in high school,
my skin was dull and blemished, which caused me to be shy and bullied by others. I decided to enhance
my skincare in order to boost my confidence and look. By having pristine skin, a stunning figure,
dazzling teeth, and elegant clothes, this world set a new standard for beauty. I concentrated on upward
social comparison, and I constantly compared myself to others I thought were better than me. During
these times, I longed to be like them, and I was able to develop my benchmarks based on their
comparison. The second example of social comparison in my life is comparing my grades and
accomplishments to my younger sister's progress; my confidence grew as a result of my sister's success.
When I compared my academic achievement to her school achievements, I noticed that my sibling was
very successful because she had the highest grade in elementary school and earned the title of
valedictorian in her class, but I only received the salutatorian degree. When I learned that my courage and
capacities couldn't compete with those of my sister, I was inspired to strive myself to the utmost, to
achieve more and develop my self-confidence and abilities.
This, in fact, is what has driven me to my current level of self-acceptance. As an outcome, I have
a very high self-esteem and am always enthusiastic about my success and triumphs in my activities. I
rarely, if ever, worry about what people think of me. I was able to establish solid status and roles of the
reflected appraisal procedure. It has enabled me to see myself how others would like to see me. And by
putting myself in this position, I've been able to be a nice brother to my younger sister. With the help of
social comparison, I discovered that there are no two, three, or trillion selves, only one that only you can
know and that no one else can divulge to you. Social comparisons are for living in the worldly affairs of
community, where you’re self is ranked by riches, power, social standing, or any other facet of the ego
satisfying beliefs.
