Ged102 Week 1 WGN

Week 1 of the course focuses on discussing the nature of mathematics, including what it is, how it is expressed, and where it is applied. The week includes 6 tasks: reading modules and lectures, reading a book chapter, writing an essay, and submitting a weekly journal. Lessons cover types of patterns in nature, using mathematics to systematize patterns like logarithmic and golden spirals, and applications of math in fields like pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and engineering. Key equations discussed include the Pythagorean theorem, Newton's law of gravity, the Gaussian distribution, Euler's formula, and the theory of relativity.

Lesson 1. Patterns and Numbers in Nature

Highlights

A. What are the three (3) types of pattern?

The three (3) types of patterns are the following: Numeric Pattern which pinpoints of
talking about the patterns of numbers, the Geometric Pattern (also simply known as
the pattern of shapes) and lastly, the Patterns of Change.

B. What is Golden ratio and what is its estimated value?

The golden ratio, also known as the divine proportion, is the ratio of two consecutive
Fibonacci numbers. The golden ratio has an approximate or an estimated value of
1.618.

C. What is a fractal?

A fractal is a type or a kind of random pattern that has each part bearing the same
characteristics or attributes as a whole.

Lesson 2. Systemizing Patterns using Mathematics

Highlights

A. Describe a Logarithmic Spiral.

Logarithmic spirals are drawn conventionally with an infinite number of golden

triangles. The logarithmic spiral starts from the bisection of the base angles, which is
an indicative of the creation of the golden triangle. The prior process was repeated
until the logarithmic spiral is visibly drawn from the indicated vertices.

B. Describe a Golden Spiral.

Similarly, the golden spiral is typically created with the use of golden rectangles. Also
known as the Fibonacci spiral, the corners of the squares within the rectangle are
connected with circles that are measured by a quarter (otherwise known as quarter-
circles).

C. Enumerate and describe five (5) of the 17 equations that changed the world.

1. The Pythagorean Theorem

One of the 17 equations that changed the world is the Pythagorean theorem, which
was perceived to be an instrument in the case of measuring lands, navigation and
attributing land maps. It involves of having three sides of a right triangle, stating that
the area of the squares (of the parts) ultimately equate to the areas of the squares
from the two other parts.

2. Newton’s Law of Gravity

Another equation that changed the world is Newton’s law of gravity, which deemed
to be the exemplification for seizing a better understanding of astronomical model of
the solar system and the principal of providing the drive to grasp the concept behind
momentum, divine force and other laws. It involves deeming the magnitude of the
force which is equal to the gravitational constant being multiplied by the product of

the masses from the two objects, and eventually divided by the squared value of
distance.

3. The Gaussian Distribution

Otherwise known as the normal distribution, the equation became convenient in the
case of Inferential Statistics, which is in particular of event generalization. Such
equation became applicable in subject matters such as social sciences, engineering,
natural sciences and the like. It involves gauging any measurement values adhering
to normal distribution having an equal value of measurements above and below
respectively given the mean value.

4. Euler’s Formula

The equation paved the way to providing new perspectives regarding space and
shapes and eventually a clear connection between the structure of DNA and
geometry. It involves the values (or numbers) of vertices and faces jointly are as one
ultimately has two more in comparison with the number of edges.

5. The Theory of Relativity

The equation transformed the way of human living in the cosmos. It involves the
presence of energy and mass being interchangeable, eventually defining them as
different forms coming out of the same matter. Thus, one can say that energy
equates to the mass that is multiplied by the squared speed of the light.

Lesson 3. Systemizing Functionality of Mathematics

Highlights

How is mathematics utilized in the following areas?

A. Pharmaceutical Field

Mathematics was used in the pharmaceutical field by preparing individuals to draw

measurements and calculations which are definite steps in order to prescribe, prepare
and administer the required medication. Furthermore, the discipline (mathematics)
is utilized in the case of drawing statistical graphic representations. Mathematics is
as well used to gauge how long their prescriptions will last for a particular patient.

B. Agriculture

Farmers apparently use the concept of mathematics in the course of daily living, they
utilize arithmetic operations in order to fulfill processes such as making payments
and purchasing the needed equipment. Inevitably, they determine the prices of their
livestock, the yields which their animals or their crops will produce and the like.

C. Engineering

Mathematics is perceived to be the core discipline for a matter such as engineering.

Engineers use math in particular ways in order to further their career and their
engineering development, they utilize the concept to aid and gauge their equipment
and test such inventions. They use math in order to simultaneously design and
eventually simulate their products that they have engineered.
