Improved Visualization Changes:

 Upgraded Start Page in 2008 compared to CR XI R2

 Look and feel have been changed
o The icons have been changed in CR 2008
o Design page looks more dominant on the light bluish tone.
 It is backward compatible but cannot be opened in versions prior to CR 9.
 CR 2008 reports are compatible with BOE 3.1 & BOE 3.2. They can also be deployed in BOE R1 & R2, but
the features of CR 2008 will not be available with this environment.
 Display Group Tree has been renamed as Display Preview Panel under File > Options since the preview
panel now have the “Groups”, “Parameters” & “Find” buttons.

Save Lock Report Design:

2008 comes with a new feature that helps you lock the report by saving with password.
Report can still be saved with different name but cannot be overwritten without knowing the password.

Sort Controls:
It is a new feature where we can sort the data based on specific set of columns. We can bind these
controls to the column headings which user can use to sort the data.
If there are multiple groupings, the data cannot be sorted across the groups but within.

Query Panel:
There is a Query Panel that exists in CR 2008 under Database Menu. This will be enabled only with
reports using Universes. Once the report is created, you can use the Query panel to see the details of the Universe
and edit/modify the query as required.

Show Hidden Sections in Design:

We can truly hide/Unhide the hidden sections in Design from Preview mode. This is available in R2 as well
but not sure how many of us are aware of it. We can use this in our reporting to simplify the design in design mode.

Clamp Page Footer:

Now we can remove the remaining space in the Page Footer by using “Clamp Page Footer” from Section
Expert

Improved Pagination:
Developers can now use the Paging tab of the section expert to easily control page breaking after N
records/groups.

Custom Page Size:

We cannot define the page size in earlier versions of CR and it becomes cumbersome especially when the report
uses Cross Tab because the row labels will appear like duplicated when exported to Excel.
With BO XI R3 (CR 2008), we will be able to reset the page size to custom size.
Improved Report Designer
Single edition: Crystal Reports 2008 comes in a single edition that is the feature equivalent of the
old Developer Edition. Report samples and developer documentation are now a free, optional
download.

Multilingual reporting: You can install the product with multiple language builds and then switch the
report designer UI to use any of the installed language packs. The report content locale can also be
explicitly set for each report file. This setting controls sorting, grouping and formatting that matches
the local language customs and conventions.

Reduced install footprint: The download size has been reduced to 250MB to provide fast access via
the download site.

Advanced Cross Tab Functions:

Calculated Member:

You can add row or column in your cross tab using Calculated Member. You can insert you custom
formulas (Rate, Minute, RPM).
You can define it as one time calculation or recurring calculation by editing the Insertion Formula.

Embedded Summaries:

You can embed your customized summary fields in addition to the existing summary field. This does not
create a new column or row like Calculated Member; rather add a text box in the summary. You can edit this text box
and insert our desired calculation formula.

EMBEDDING XCELSIUS 2008 VISUALIZATIONS IN CRYSTAL REPORTS 2008:

Xcelcius Visual models needs to be created using Xcelcius Enterprise 2008 or Engage, Engage Server 2008

Xcelcius:

Xcelsius is point-and-click data visualization software for creating interactive charts, graphs, and what-if scenario
models, and delivering them as part of Crystal Reports, Microsoft Office, Adobe PDF, and the Web.
Xcelsius uses a unique combination of Microsoft Excel, as a data modeling tool, and Adobe Flash Player, as the
rendering engine, to compile dynamic visualizations.

Refer to documentation and sample report

Interactive Parameters, Interactive Sorting, Parameterized Sorting & Filtering:

These are called as as “Interactive Parameters”. Now while creating a parameter, you have the option to set (Read
only, Editable & Do not show). You need to make it Editable for interaction

With the help of Interactive Parameterized fields, we can group & sort the data in the report interactively.
We can also filter the data without refreshing the database with the help of Saved-Data expert. Review samples for
further information.

There is a new feature called optional parameter. Once a parameter is set to optional, user need not supply any
information for this parameter but user needs to be educated by using some meaningful text in Prompt Text.

hasvalue function needs to be used

New SFDC driver & Bar code support:

With XI R2, one has to download the Crystal Reports Report Pack for Salesforce.com 3.0 and install it in order to
report off from SFDC.

With CR 2008, SFDC driver comes with the installation and one can notice it under “Create New Connection”

Another new feature in CR 2008 that any field can be converted to barcode. Right click on any column and choose
“Change to Barcode”

New Flexible Deployment Options:

You can now leverage the feature of deploying the reports to CrystalReports.com.

What is CrystalReports.com?

CR.com is an on-demand web-based BI platform to publish and share reports with internal and external users.
It comes with 2 editions:
 Starter Edition (Limited to 5 named users with 50 MB Storage or 10 reports)
 Developer Edition (@ $30 per month)
We can share Crystal Reports, Webi, PDF, Doc, Xls etc… with other users outside of organization.

Report Bursting:

Publishing is the process of making documents such as Crystal Reports, Web Intelligence Documents and Desktop
Intelligence Documents available for multiple people with their personalized information.

It distributes documents automatically to different users/recipients using different destination methods at specified
intervals.

Improved XML Exporting:

It provides powerful transformation of Crystal Reports data and integration in to other applications. You can now add
your XMLT transformations in to CR and export the report with your transformations which can be safely viewed by
the end users.

Hyperlinking Wizard:

Now we have a Hyperlinking Wizard in CR 2008 and is available in 3.1 Webi too to link to another report in the
Enterprise.

This helps designers save time using CR formulas to invoke another report using openDoc method.
