TCLP - Als

The document discusses the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP), which is used to determine if contaminated soils can be safely disposed of in landfills. TCLP simulates what happens when waste is exposed to landfill conditions to see if hazardous materials will leach out. It involves extracting a sample with an acid solution, then testing the extract for regulated metals. The laboratory described obtained accreditation to perform TCLP testing for metals according to EPA Method 1311. A table lists the regulatory limits for metals in TCLP extracts and the laboratory's lowest detectable reporting levels.

USEPA Method 1311–Toxicity Characteristic Leaching

Procedure (TCLP)
TCLP regulatory limit and ALS
What is TCLP?
Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) is designed Hong Kong accredited LOR
to determine the mobility of both organic and inorganic In March 2011, the laboratory obtained USEPA method
compounds present in liquid, solid as well as multiphasic 1311-Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure
samples. (metals) accreditation from HOKLAS and the scope of
application included TCLP metals in soils, sediments,
It is a method that simulates what happens when a sample is ashes, cements and their mixture. The following list is
disposed in a landfill and is utilized to determine whether the the TCLP regulatory limit and the laboratory accredited
contaminated soil meet the EPD landfill disposal guideline. LOR.

Why using TCLP analysis? Parameter TCLP Regulatory ALS accredited

Limit (mg/L) LOR (mg/L)
Since direct disposal of contaminated soil to landfill is not
Cadmium (Cd) 10 0.01
allowed and it must be qualified the Landfill Disposal Criteria
prior to disposal. TCLP is one of EPD approved method used Chromium (Cr) 50 0.1
to assess the soil contamination concentration. If any TCLP Copper (Cu) 250 0.1
test results of the sample exceed the disposal criteria, the Nickel (Ni) 250 0.1
contaminated soil must first be pre-treated or stabilized Lead (Pb) 50 0.1
before disposal. Zinc (Zn) 250 0.1
Mercury (Hg) 1 0.002
TCLP Process Tin (Sn) 250 0.1
The TCLP analysis begins by determining the amount of solids Silver (Ag) 50 0.1
in the sample. If the sample is a liquid waste that contains Antimony (Sb) 150 0.1
≤0.5% dry solid material, the sample itself is defined as TCLP Arsenic (As) 50 0.1
extract. Beryllium (Be) 10 0.1
Thallium (Tl) 50 0.01
On the other hand, if the sample contains ≥0.5% dry solid, the Vanadium (V) 250 0.1
liquid portion of the sample is separated from the solid phase

and stored for later analysis. The remaining solid phase

sample will undergo treatment in order to make sure every
particle is <10 mm. After that, an appropriate extraction fluid, Others accredited TCLP parameter
which is determined by the pH testing procedures stated in Cobalt (Co) 0.1
USEPA method 1311, is used for TCLP extraction. Manganese (Mn) -- 0.1
Molybdenum (Mo) 0.1
The sample is then extracted with an amount of TCLP
extraction fluid equal to 20 times the weight of the solid
phase for 16-20 hours on an agitation tumbler. After
extraction, the TCLP extract is separated from the solid phase
by filtering through a 0.6 micron filter. Finally, the TCLP
extract is combined with any liquid from the initial separation
and the sample is ready for analysis of TCLP metals by using
ICPMS and FIMS (for Hg only).
