Quarter 1 – Module 1:
The Nature of Research

This teacher made instructional material was developed to

help students enhance the previous project study or develop a new
scientific research project. This will serve as an avenue for Grade 8
students to demonstrate much higher level of competence, mastery
and proficiency in scientific investigations through continuous
development of the research project. Recommendations,
comments, and suggestions is appreciated.

What I Need Know
Research II for Grade 8 introduces the nature of research and processes to
learners. This will help them generate a researchable problems, formulate hypotheses,
select, synthesize and cite relevant literature following ethical standards, apply the
principles of experimental design and methodology, determine the basic statistical tools,
and enhance scientific writing skills in preparing a research proposal. This subject is
also designed to prepare the learners in establishing strong linkages, collaboration and
consultation with research institutions, industries and nearby communities.

Content Standards

The learner demonstrates understanding of the nature of research and research

processes, different standard rules in the conduct of research, which are necessary in
the preparation of the system of research documentation.

Performance Standard

The learner should be able to make a portfolio of abstracts of researches in

his/her field of interest.

After completing this module, you are expected to:

a. Define research.
b. Identify the characteristics of research.
c. Explain the importance of research.

What I Know

Pre-Assessment

Hi there! future researcher and inventors! Are you ready to rock the world with your
latest inventions and discoveries? Are you excited to learn and have a winning piece of
materials that you can probably say a fruit or product of your own hard work? I’m sure
you are! But before that, let us first find out how familiar you are with the nature of
research by simple answering the pre examination that follows. Good luck! And check
this out.

Multiple Choice: Directions: Choose the correct answer among the options A,B,C and D.
Write the Letter only as your answer in a separate sheet.

What’s New?
Lesson 1 - What is Research?

Research is defined as the scientific investigation of phenomena which includes

collection, presentation, analysis and interpretation of facts that links an individual’s
speculation with reality (Calmorin, 2012). In other words, research is the systematic
study of trend or event which involves careful collection, presentation, analysis and
interpretation of quantitative data or facts that relates man’s thinking with reality.

Procedure:

1.Read “What’s New?” above.

2. Fill out the bubble map by writing the meaning of research at the center and its
characteristics around the map.

3. Then, answer the guide question below.

Lesson 2 - Characteristics of Research

1. EMPIRICAL
Research is based on direct
experience or observation by the
researcher. The collection of data relies
on practical experience without giving
consideration to scientific knowledge or

theory.
2. LOGICAL
Research is based on valid
procedures and principles. Scientific
study is done in an orderly manner so
that the investigator has confidence on

3. CYCLICAL
Research is a cyclical process
because it starts with a problem and ends

4. ANALYTICAL
Research utilizes proven analytical
procedures in gathering the data, whether
historical, descriptive, experimental and

5. CRITICAL
Research exhibits careful and
precise judgment. A higher level of
confidence must be established.

6. METHODICAL
Research is conducted in a
methodical manner without bias using
systematic method and procedures.

7. REPLICABILITY
The research design and
procedures are replicated or repeated to
enable the researcher to arrive at valid
and conclusive results. Replicability of

Lesson 3 - Importance of Research

Man’s major needs and problems demand research. Research is sometimes

thought to be concerned only with the physical phenomena that man cannot do away
with these things because the physical phenomena have domain properly emphasized
on material cause and effects.

Man’s major needs and problems which demand research include how to reduce
his burden of work, how to relieve suffering, and how to increase satisfaction in fulfilling
his needs, cravings and aspirations. Others are the as follow:

■ To discover new facts about known phenomena. ( Alcohol is a known

phenomenon and research may turn it into a kind of fuel equal in quality to
gasoline)

■ To find answers to problems which are only partially solved by existing

methods and information. (Cancer is a serious disease which is only partially
cured by present methods but due to intensive and continuous research, the
disease may be eradicated later on).

■ Improve existing techniques and develop new instruments or products.

(This goal envisages the invention of new gadgets and machines, food products
and others used by man).

■ To discover previously unrecognized substances or elements. ( Previously

we had 92 elements but due to research we now have more than 100 elements )

■ Discover pathways of action of known substances and elements. (Due to

research we come to know the dangers from abusive use of unprescribed drugs
and some poisonous substances)

■ To order related, valid generalizations into systematized science.

(Schlotfeldt. Ibid). (The result of this is the science we are now studying in
school).

■ To provide basis for decision-making in business, industry, education,

government, and in other undertakings. ( This is basing important decision
upon the result of research)
■ To satisfy the researcher’s curiosity. (Sanchez,p.3) (Edison was curious about
how a hen hatches her eggs and made a research on that and he invented the
incubator).

■ To find answers to queries by means of scientific methods. (In what setting

is life expectancy higher, in the city or in the barrio?)

■ To acquire a better and deeper understanding about one phenomenon that

can be known and understood better by research is why women are
generally smaller than men.

■ To expand or verify existing knowledge. (This usually happened when

researches are replicated).
