BIO 112 Lab 6
This was an amazing lab, as a psychology major, I felt as this lab relied more on opinions
as well as own fondness on the sexual partner that are desired. The sexual selection is the act of
choosing a preferred gender because of certain physical characteristics they have. For example,
some are attracted to facial symmetry or mediocrity. Not many would admit to this, but attraction
play a part in choosing a life partner. Part of sexual selection is breeding with somebody as
attractive as yourself or more. You could also think of the genes that this partner could pass to
future offspring. Facial symmetry hypothesis is the concept that facial symmetry is considered to
be more of an attractive aspect in both males and females. While the average hypothesis is
blending average attraction people together and making a higher-level attractiveness. Both of
these hypotheses were explored in this lab.
Methods/ Materials:
The method I used took a while for me to understand. I realize that once I exit the Face Research
website, the order of the faces will change. Once I was on the website, I had to start over and
decided to take a screenshot of the page in case the network failed. Facial research allows you to
select faces and combine them to give you an average look. There are different races and facial
features on this website. I divided 20 different women into according to their appearances, and
20 men, from 110 categories, and then I used tools for you to group faces together. The
instructions ask you to choose the top three best-looking men and women, combine them, and
rank the face. I performed the same steps for average faces and the face with the lowest score.
Finally, you must classify and classify 20 faces of women and men. Based on the date, when I
rate them, I am more generous to women than to men.
Low: Female
(5,18,20): 4
Low: Male
(3,15,20): 4
Middle: Female
(12,14,19): 7
Middle: Male
(6,7,16): 6
High: Female
(7,8,11): 9
High: Male
(10,17,18): 7
Average All: Females (8)
Average All: Males (8)
The data table shows the ranking of the first 20 females and the 20 males from the face research
website. The scores were between one through ten, majority of males and females received either
a four or a five. With the three faces combined for average low, average middle, and average
high, received a higher score compared to individual faces. With the averaging more faces the
rating increase compared to the normal above average.
Discussion:
My hypothesis, the hypothesis of facial symmetry and average, turned out to be correct, which is
correct. The male and female higher-ranked faces all have facial symmetry and are given 8 or 9
points. The assumption of averaging is also correct. Once the three faces of are combined into
the low, medium, and high categories, the score is as evidence that the average hypothesis is
successful. The average score of the three faces increased by points. The final result of
successful sexual selection is that when 20 faces in are combined with women, the ranking is
much higher than the score based on images.
