Descriptive Text

1. Definition of Descriptive Text


Descriptive Text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to
describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing.

2. Generic Structure of Descriptive Text


When writing descriptive text, there are some generic structures (actually not
mandatory) for our writing to be true. The arrangement is:
1. Identification: (contains about the introduction of a person, place, animal or
object will be described.)
2. Description: contains a description of something such as animal, things, place or
person by describing its features, forms, colors, or anything related to what the
writer describe.

3. Purpose of Descriptive Text


a. To describe person, thing or place in specific
b. To describe a particular person, thing or place

4. Language Feature of Descriptive Text


a. Specific participant : has a certain object, is not common and unique (only one).
for example: Bandengan beach, my house, Borobudur temple, uncle Jim
b. The use of the adjective (an adjective) to clarify the noun, for example: a
beautiful beach, a handsome man, the famous place in Jepara, etc.
c. The use of simple present tense: The sentence pattern used is simple present
because it tells the fact of the object described.
d. Action verb: verbs that show an activity (for example, run, sleep, walk, cut etc....

5. Example of Descriptive Text

Pink Beach

Pink Beach or Pantai Merah Muda is one of the beaches in Komodo Island, East Nusa
Tenggara. The beach is called Pink Beach because the beach sand is pink.

The pink color of its beach is a mixture of white sand beach colors mixed with crushed coral,
shells, calcium carbonate from marine invertebrates that are very small, and also
Foraminifera, microscopic amoeba that has a red body shell.

At Pink Beach, there are so many marine organisms. No fewer than 1,000 species of fish,
260 species of coral, and 70 species of sponge can be found here. Having so much marine
life, this place is a proper spot for snorkelling and diving for sea sports lovers.
Claudia

Hi, I am Vivian. Today I want to tell about my best friend, Claudia. Claudia is special. I like her
spontaneous nature.

She is young, exuberant, and lively; she is slim and active.


She often wears colourful clothes. Do you see her picture? She wears a green shirt and her
favourite jeans.

She has a creative mind: students love her passionate outlook on life.

My Lovely Cat

I have a stray cat as my pet. He is really playful, He loved to play with me and the new things
he found. He has orange and white fur, his fur is so soft and I like to rubs it for him.

He has a long tail. He likes to play with it. He is also always try to catch his tail sometimes. I
also like to hold him in my hand, when I hold him like that he will fall asleep.

Homework:

1. Write your descriptive text. It can be person, place, or anything.
