Math 10 July 2019

The instructional plan is for a 10th grade mathematics lesson on arithmetic sequences. The lesson objectives are for students to define arithmetic sequences, use the arithmetic sequence formula to find unknown terms of a sequence, and display active involvement in finding unknown terms. The plan includes activities for students to practice finding rules for nth terms of sequences and explaining their answers. It provides guidance for teaching the arithmetic mean rule and how to use it to discover the rule for the nth term given two terms of a sequence. Students will complete an oral and written test on finding rules for given arithmetic sequences.

Activity # 2 Work by pair

One should do the activity and the other will record the result.
a. Get a piece of paper. Fold it into half. Into how many regions the papers were divided?
b. Record the result.
# of folds 1 2 3 4 5 6
# of equal regions
c. With the paper folded into half, fold it again into another half. How many equal regions were there?
Repeat the procedure up to the 6th fold and record the result.
What do you observe about the number of regions? Does it form a sequence is there a common difference?

Analysis

Tell what will be the next term and why.

 3, 8, 13, 18, ________
 1, 2, 4, 8, __________
 24, 12, 6, 3, ________
 1, 5, 9, 13, _________
 12, 9, 6, 3, _________
Ask: Which are arithmetic sequence? Why? Which are not arithmetic sequence? Why?

Say: Referring to activity 2, the number of equal regions: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 forms a sequence but not arithmetic
sequence since it has no common difference.
Ask: Will you get the ratio between the two succeeding terms starting from the last term? What is/are the ratio?
Did you get the same ratio?
Say: Since the sequence gives you a common ratio, the sequence is a geometric sequence.

Ask: How will you show that a 1 , a2 , a3 ,

… nth
is a geometric sequence?

Guide the learners to formulate a rule for geometric sequence by presenting examples below:

Identify which of the following is a geometric sequence

1, 2, 6, 24, 120, …
81, 27, 9, 3, 1…

use the formula, but if the given is the 4th term and common ratio, you need to find first the 1st term and solve

the rule, another given are the terms for example 4th term and 9th term first thing that we are going to do is to
th
find the common ratio, the 1st term, then the rule for the n term.

explain.
