Statistical Analysis in Software Application 2

The document provides examples of calculating measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) for various data sets, including test scores, daily earnings, number of items sold, dress pattern lengths, credit hour loads, and opinion survey responses. It demonstrates how to calculate and interpret the mean, median, and mode, and explains that the median and mode can be better measures than the mean when there are outliers in the data.

Module 3

SAQ 3-1
Go back to the scores obtained by Bertha Pila on her statistics exam.

1. What is the mean of the score?

 m = ∑x/n
m = 390/9
m = 43.33
 The mean is 43.33.
2. The mean passing mark is 40. Did Bertha pass statistics? How far is her
average from the mean passing mark?
 Yes. Bertha pass statistic. She is (43.33 – 40.00) 3.33 higher than the
mean.

SAQ 3-2

Consider the daily earnings of the employees of a buy and sell firm:
210, 210, 850, 360, 310, 210, 210, 960, 210

1. Construct an ungrouped frequency distribution table which at least includes

information on X and f.
X f
210 5
310 1
360 1
850 1
960 1
∑x = 2,690 n=9

2. Find the mean daily earnings of the employees of the buy and sell firm.
 m = ∑x/n
m = 2,690/9
m = 298.9
 The mean of the daily earnings of the employees of the buy and sell firm
is 298.9.

SAQ 3-3
Last summer, six salesmen in a heating and air-conditioning firm sold the following
number of air-conditioning units: 16, 9, 11, 6, 10, and 8. Find the average number of
units sold and show your solution.
 m = ∑x/n
m = 60/6
m = 10
 The average number of air-conditioning units sold by the salesmen is 10.

Computation of the Mean for Group Data

SAQ 3-4

Mr. Allan Gali, a fabric store manager eager to see if the latest patterns for
size 12 dresses show a longer hemline than last year’s. if this is so, he can then expect
to sell more fabric since each pattern will call for more material. He took a random
sample of ten dress patterns and measured in inches the length of each pattern from
the neckline to the hemline. The ten dress patterns have the following lengths:

41.5 42 39 44 43.5 45 43 45 42 46

1. Compute for n, ∑X, and

X f xf
39 1 39
41.5 1 41.5
42 2 84
43 1 43
43.5 1 43.5
44 1 44
45 2 90
46 1 46
∑x = 344 n = 10 ∑xf = 431

 m = ∑xf/n
m = 431/10
m = 43.1
 The mean for the dress patterns is 43.1 inches.
2. Last year, the mean length of size 12 dresses was 36 inches. Can Mr, Gali
to sell more material per dress this year.
 Yes. Mr. Gali can sell more this year because it exceeds the mean length
of size last year by 7.1.
The mean has one major disadvantage; its value can be strongly influenced by
extreme scores. Specifically, the mean is pulled toward the outliers in an exaggerated
fashion. When there are extreme scores in a distribution, it is best to use other
measures of central tendency, such as the median.

SAQ 3-5
Consider the following sample of measurements:

5 7 4 5 20 6 2

1. Calculate the median (Md) of this sample.

 md = 5
 Arranging the samples from lowest to highest (2,4,5,5, 6,7,20).
 Therefore, the median (md) of the sample is 5.
2. Eliminate the last measurement (the 2) and calculate the median of the
remaining measurements.
 Arranging the remaining samples from lowest to highest (2,4,5,5,6,7).
Since it is even, get the average to the 2 numbers in the middle.
 md = (5 + 5)/2
md = 5
 Therefore, the median (md) of the sample is still 5.

3. Is the median affected by the measurement 20? Why?

 No. Because the 2 consecutive in the middle is the same. BUT if it differs
from one another, then it is.

In certain situations, the median maybe a better measure of central tendency

than the mean. Particularly, the median is less sensitive than the mean to extremely
large or small measurements.

SAQ-6 The College of Nursing, UP Manila makes a report to the Finance and
3
Scholarship Committee about the average credit hour load a full-time student takes. A
12-credit hour load is the minimum requirement for full-time status. For the same tuition,
students may take up to 21 credit hours. A random sample of 40 students yielded the
following information in credit hours.

17 12 14 17 13 16 18 20 13 12
12 17 16 15 14 12 12 13 17 14
15 12 15 16 12 18 20 19 12 15
18 14 16 17 15 19 12 13 12 15
1. Create an ungrouped frequency distribution table.
X f xf
20 2 40
19 2 38
18 3 54
17 5 85
16 4 64
15 6 90
14 4 56
13 4 52
12 10 120
n = 40 ∑xf = 599

2. What is the mode of this distribution? Is it different from the mean and the
median?
 The mode of the sample is 12, because it is the most frequent number
that occurs.
 No. Because the mean and median is 15.
3. If the Finance and Scholarship Committee is going to fund from the College
according to the average student credit hour load, which of the three measures
of central tendency do you think the Committee should use and why?
 The measure of central tendency that the finance and scholarship
committee should use the mean or average to measure the credit hour
load. This will enable them to determine the possible funds that they will
release once they approve the list of scholars.

SAQ 3-7

The faculty of the College of Medicine had registered the following weights in kilograms
in March 1999.

74 82 78 72 78 73 78 73 78 72 78 81

Find the mean, median and mode.

 m = ∑x/n
m = 917/12
m = 76.42
The mean for the weight of faculty of the College of Medicine is 76.42
kilograms.
 Arranging the samples from lowest to highest
(72,72,73,73,74,78,78,78,78,78,81,82). Since it is even, get the average
to the 2 numbers in the middle.
md = (78 + 78)/2
md = 78
Therefore, the median (md) of the sample is 78.

 The mode of the sample is 78, because it is the most frequent number
that occurs

SAQ 3-8

A random sample of 12 people gave their opinions about making age 50 a compulsory
retirement age for government employees. Opinions were given on a scale of 1-10
where 1 = strongly disagree and 10 strongly agree. Here is the result of the survey.
3 1 3 2 3 3 5 5 3 4 1 1
1. What is the mean?
 m = ∑x/n
m = 34/12
m = 2.8
The average for the opinion about making age 50 a compulsory retirement
age for government employees is 2.8.

2. What is the median?

 Arranging the samples from lowest to highest (1,1,1,2,3,3,3,3,3,4,5,5).
Since it is even, get the average to the 2 numbers in the middle.
md = (3 + 3)/2
md = 3
Therefore, the median (md) of the sample is 3.

3. What is the mode?

 The mode of the sample is 3, because it is the most frequent number that
occurs.

4. What is the interpretation?

 The interpretation is that the public disagree with the thought of making
the age 50 a compulsory retirement age for government employees. The
reason for this interpretation is the low average rate regarding the survey.
