CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, locale of the

study, respondent of the study, sampling size and

techniques, data gathering instruments, and data gathering

procedure.

Research Design

The descriptive survey design was used for this study.

The design facilitated the gathering of data to determine,

describe and analyze relationships between the peer

influence and study habits of the respondents.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of the study were the Second Year BSEd

students of Northern Negros State College of Science and

Technology.

Locale of the Study

This study was conducted at Brgy. Old Sagay, Sagay City

Province of Negros Occidental, and was conducted at TED

department Building in Northern Negros State College of

Science and Technology.

21

Sampling Size and Techniques

Respondents were taken from the population of BSEd

Second Year Students S.Y. 2013-2014 with a total population

of 52 students. The researchers decided to use Universal

sampling techniques (take all). Then, descriptive

statistical tools, namely; Frequency, Percentage, Mean and

Pearson Correlation were used in this study.

Data Gathering Instruments

The research instrument has three parts; the first part

is the respondents profile information. It includes the

name, age gender and civil status of the respondents. Second

part is the Survey questionnaires for peer influence and the

third part is survey questionnaire for study habits. The

instrument used in this study was self-made and modified.

To determine the extent/level of peer influence and study

habits of second year education students of NONESCOST, this

scale was used:

VERBAL VERBAL
WEIGHT SCALE DESCRIPTION DESCRIPTION
(PEER INFLUENCE) (STUDY HABITS)
5 4.20 - 5.00 Very Strong Very Often
4 3.40 – 4.19 Strong Often
3 2.60 – 3.39 Moderate Sometimes
2 1.80 – 2.59 Weak Occasionally
1 1.00 – 1.79 Very Weak Very Seldom
Validity of the Research Instrument
22

The instrument or the data gathering tool for peer

influence and study habits was validated by three experts

using the Good and Scates validating tool to established

face and content validity.

The ratings and interpretations are following:

Ratings Interpretation

5 – Excellent 4.20 - 5.00

4 – Very Good 3.40 – 4.19

3 – Good 2.60 – 3.39

2 – Fair 1.80 – 2.59

1 – Poor 1.00 – 1.79

Validity rating obtained from the three validators is

4.04 which interpreted as Very Good.

Reliability of the Instrument

The Validated instruments were tested to third year

BSEd students of NONESCOST who do not belong to the selected

group of the study. Then the results of the tool were

subjected using Cronback’s alpha which is .993 for the

instrument of peer influence and .992 for the study habits’

instrument.
23

Data Gathering Procedure

Before the conduct of the study, the validated Survey

Questionnaires was again conducted as dry run to the third

year BSEd students for internal reliability. The researchers

asked permission to the teachers who are in charge during

pre-test and retests.

Statistical Analysis

Data were analyzed and interpreted in the light of the

objectives of the study using Frequency, Percentage, Mean

and Correlation (Pearson R) for the Statistical tools.
