SINGLE EFFECT RECIPROCATING PUMP

:OBJECTIVES

.To know how a reciprocating pump work.1

.To calculate the actual discharge flow rate.2

.To calculate the theoretical discharge flow rate.3

.To calculate the volumetric efficiency.4

.To calculate the slip and slip percent.5

:THEORY

Pump is mechanical device to increase the pressure energy of the

.fluid

Broadly pump can be classified as centrifugal pump or positive displacement

.pumps

Reciprocating pump is one kind of the positive displacement pumps and it

known (positive displacement pump) because in it liquid is pushed out of
.the cylinder by the actual displacement of the piston or plunger

A reciprocating pump is driven by power available from an external source

.and consists of a cylinder in which piston or plunger reciprocates

This movement of the piston or plunger creates alternately vacuum

.presser and positive presser in the cylinder in which raises the water

If water acts only on one side of the piston the pump is known as (single
.acting pump) fig (1) shows this type of pump

These pumps suck the water into the cylinder during outward
stroke, in this stroke atmospheric pressure acting on the surface of the
water helps to push the water into the cylinder. During inward stroke the
suction valve closes and the water is forced up in the delivery pipe. The
construction and working of a single acting reciprocating pump is shown in
fig (1)

FIG (1) - reciprocating pump

The working of the reciprocating pump can be easily understood with

the help of above figure, the piston moves backward and forward in the
cylinder due to the rotation of the crank, during outward stroke, piston
moves to the right, and this movement of the piston causes vacuum in the
.cylinder
:TYPES OF RECIPROCATING PUMP

:According to the action of water-1

.a-Single acting

.b-Double acting

:According to the number of cylinders-2

.a-Single cylinder

.b-Double cylinder

.c-Triple cylinder

:According to the existence of air vessel-3

.a - With air vessel

.b-Without vessel

:CALCULATION

Ƞ V =Q act/Q the

Q act = V/T

Q the = A x L x N x Z

Slip = Q the – Q act
